Liverpool face Red Star Belgrade at Anfield on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Here’s all the info you need to watch.
After surviving a stern test at Huddersfield over the weekend, Liverpool will look to take a full three points as Red Star Belgrade visit Anfield on Wednesday evening in a crucial Group C matchup in the Champions League.
While supporters hope that the Reds can continue their fine attacking form with talisman Mohamed Salah getting on the scoresheet again this past weekend, Liverpool may be forced into making additional changes from the win at Huddersfield as Jordan Henderson went off early with an injury while Sadio Mane and Naby Keita continue to be doubtful with injuries sustained over the international break.
Red Star Belgrade comes into the match off claims of match-fixing as French authorities are looking into claims that a club official possibly bet €5 million on the Serbian side to lose by five goals in their last Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. PSG defeated Red Star Belgrade on Matchday 2 by a 6-1 scoreline.
While Red Star Belgrade deny these charges, fans will surely be watching to see if these allegations have any effect on the Serbian club’s performance on the field this week.
Red Star Belgrade will also be without their traveling supporters as fans of the Serbian club are banned from attending the match due to a pitch invasion incident back in August in a Champions League qualifier against RB Salzburg. Despite the ban, many Red Star fans are still expected to make the trip to Liverpool as Merseyside police are bracing for their arrival.
This is the first of back-to-back matches between these two clubs in the Champions League. Liverpool will make the return trip to Belgrade to meet the Serbian champions on Nov. 6. The last time these two sides met was in the second round of the 1973-74 European Cup with Red Star Belgrade winning the tie 4-2 on aggregate with a pair of 2-1 victories.
