The New York Giants traded Damon Harrison to the Detroit Lions for a fifth-round draft pick. The addition of Harrison should bolster the Lions run defense.

The New York Giants are starting fresh, and they are offloading some key defensive pieces in the process.

On Tuesday, (October 23) the Giants traded former first-round draft pick Eli Apple to the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2019 and a seventh-round pick in 2020. Today, the Giants offloaded fan-favorite Damon “Snacks” Harrison, as he was traded to the Detroit Lions.

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur insists that the team isn’t tanking for the upcoming draft, but believes that the moves made will help the team in the short term future while setting up the long term in the process. Harrison enjoyed his best season with the team in 2016 after signing a five-year deal with the team, nabbing All-Pro honors. But, his pedigree alone wasn’t enough for Shurmur to consider keeping the defensive tackle. The Giants were slated to be a contender this season, and their 1-6 record isn’t matching their preseason expectations.

Harrison’s addition to the Lions should boost their struggling run defense. As of today, the Lions rank 30th in the league against the run. The Lions already possess a talented defensive line, featuring players such as A’Shawn Robinson and Sylvester Williams. But even those two anchoring the defensive line hasn’t translated to success on defense. Harrison’s presence should help the Lions defense iron out their issues.

The Lions are currently sporting a 3-3 record, and are only a game out from being in first place in their NFC North division. Harrison’s arrival should be key in positioning the Lion’s for a potential post-season run as the second half of the season approaches. Whether it all goes to plan, we shall wait and see.
