Oklahoma State looks to play spoiler when they host the first-place Texas Longhorns in a Big 12 showdown on Saturday night.
The battle for supremacy in the Big 12 is heating up as the Texas Longhorns head to Stillwater to face the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Texas is looking to stay on top in the conference standings while Oklahoma State is looking to get back on track to salvage their season. This is the fifth Big 12 game for both teams.
Is Texas back? The Longhorns are proving to be real contenders for the Big 12 championship so far this season after many were skeptical heading into Tom Herman’s second season. Since their opening week loss to Maryland, Texas has won six straight games including a thrilling Red River Rivalry showdown against Oklahoma.
However, Baylor made the Longhorns sweat two weeks ago. Texas trailed 7-3 after one quarter and Sam Ehlinger was knocked out of the game with a shoulder injury. With Shane Buechele in control, the Longhorns held on for a 23-17 victory, but the road does not get any easier. Oklahoma State has beaten the Longhorns three straight years and will be looking to please their alumni on Homecoming weekend.
At the beginning of this season, Oklahoma State looked to be a team that would challenge for the Big 12 title. Unfortunately, the Cowboys have lost three of their first four conference games. Two losses against unranked Texas Tech and Iowa State occurred when the Cowboys were ranked. A blowout 31-12 loss to Kansas State now has Oklahoma State sitting at 4-3. Taylor Cornelius started the season strong but has been the Achilles’ heel of the offense.
The defense has also struggled recently as well, surrendering an average of 394.7 yards per game. Mike Gundy has been down similar roads with tough seasons going back to 2005. However, he is arguably the program’s most successful coach. Do not be surprised if Oklahoma State puts up a good fight or pulls off the upset.
Saturday night’s game will be nationally televised on ABC, meaning fans can also stream this one on ESPN Plus with a TV provider login.
