1. Justus Sheffield

Quite a few people inside the organization were hoping Sheffield could become an X-factor for the team in the 2018 postseason. That obviously didn’t happen. Now it’s unclear what sort of role, if any, Sheffield will have in the Bronx next season.

That’s not good news when you consider the fact that Sheffield is the organization’s No. 1 prospect. His lack of command has caused some scouts to sour on his chances of becoming a quality starter. If he ends up in the bullpen he can still be a valuable player, but his value drops significantly.

It’s clearly a huge offseason for the talented southpaw. If he can come into Spring Training and pitch well, he could easily start the year firmly entrenched in Boone’s starting rotation. If he struggles he could start the year in AAA instead.

One other thing to note here is that Sheffield is going to be mentioned in a lot of trade rumors this winter. There’s no guarantee he’s going to be a member of the Yankees organization when 2019 begins. Cashman could easily elect to trade him in for a more established commodity.

If he stays, he’s a guy who could grow into a real difference maker for the Yankees. That’s the best case scenario for the team in 2019.
