The defeat to Inter in the Milan derby last Sunday has only increased the speculation about coach Gennaro Gattuso’s future. Roberto Donadoni, part of the legendary Milan team of the late 1980s and early 1990s, is the latest rumored replacement. Gattuso’s side sit in the bottom half of the table going into this game, but a win could conceivably lift Milan up to fifth spot, so tightly packed are the Serie A standings. The club have invested heavily by Italian standards over the past couple of years but have consistently been outperformed by teams with lesser resources — not least today’s opponents, who currently lie seven places above them — and it’s a squad that continues to look much better on paper than it tends to on the pitch.
The departure of Lucas Torreira to Arsenal in the summer doesn’t seem to have affected Sampdoria at all, as the Genoa side are presently in fifth position. They have the meanest defense in Serie A, letting in just four goals in nine matches, which has led to center-back Lorenzo Tonelli earning his first call-up to the Italian national squad. But Sampdoria’s stand-out players are mainly found in their attack. French striker Gregoire Defrel, on loan from Roma with an option to buy, already has five league goals, while ex-Juventus and Italy forward Fabio Quagliarella, now 35, has been rolling back the years with four assists in nine appearances. Regular Premier League viewers will also recognize Uruguayan attacking midfielder Gaston Ramirez from his spells with Southampton, Hull and Middlesbrough.
