Tyronn Lue out as Cleveland Cavaliers head coach

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ 0-6 start has led to head coach Tyronn Lue’s abrupt dismissal from the team early into the season.
Larry Drew will be replacing Tyronn Lue as head coach according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski as the Cleveland Cavaliers have been on a downward spiral since opening night, going 0-6. Though star Kevin Love has been out a few games because of injury and the team obviously lost LeBron James, clearly management did not expect them to be this bad.
It really was only a matter of time for Lue when it comes to the win-loss column as without LeBron at his side, most of his leverage evaporated. It was that close player/coach relationship with LeBron that cemented him as coach on the Cavaliers and without it, he faced the tribulations of any other head coach on the hot seat during a losing streak. Being at the bottom of the Eastern Conference for a Cavs team expected to at least make the playoffs, signaled change was due.
One wonders if the Cavaliers might reach out to former head coach David Blatt who was let go back in Jan. 2016. General Manager David Griffin stated it was because of “a lack of fit with our personnel and our vision,” back then.
Perhaps, however, he’d fit in with their vision now? Blatt certainly seemed to utilize Kevin Love better than Lue back in the 2015-2016 season but never really got a chance to evolve Love’s usage further after losing his spot. Now that Kevin Love is the franchise player of the Cavs, it would be a perfect time to bring him back!
Does this mean Lakers head coach Luke Walton should be worried about his job over in Los Angeles? The Lakers did lose to the Spurs the other night and now that Tyronn Lue is newly available… Just saying…
This will be Larry Drew’s third head coaching job. Drew was previously the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks during 2010-14. When his contract on the Atlanta Hawks expired after the 2012-13 season he was replaced by Mike Budenholzer on the Hawks as head coach. The Bucks let go Drew back in 2014 to replace him with Jason Kidd as head coach. Drew has been an assistant coach otherwise on the Lakers, Pistons, Wizards, Nets, Hawks, and obviously the Cavaliers.
The news arrived to Lue in “the last hour” according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski so it likely came out of left field for the former Cavs head coach. However, there might have been talk prior behind closed doors concerning his role, so it’s hard to say for sure. This certainly doesn’t bode well for a future return to the Cavaliers for LeBron as he’ll remember Tyronn being ousted after six games.
Does Lue return to being an assistant coach somewhere else? Or holdout for a head coaching job? Time will tell. Lue won a ring as the Cavaliers head coach during the 2015-16 season.
