An unprecedented five teams are above 20 points through only nine match weeks in the Premier League this season. Two of those teams, Tottenham and Manchester City, will square off in an enticing matchup to cap off the match week on Monday. City, by far the favorites to win the title this season, will hope to shake off one of the pack chasing them.
With a goal difference of plus-23, Manchester City’s goal differential is higher than any other team’s goal tally, which is as absurd as it sounds. A cruising 3-0 win in midweek against Shakhtar Donetsk has City humming in the Champions League as well. Perhaps more exciting than the result, however, was the return of main man Kevin De Bruyne. In his first start of the season after returning from injury, the Belgian chipped in a few nutmegs to go with an assist. He’ll relish the chance to go again against Spurs, even if off the bench.
Tottenham, meanwhile, had a much bumpier midweek, as they may have to come to grips with their departure from the Champions League. Although not mathematically eliminated, a capitulation in the 87th minute to PSV has them sitting at only one point – five behind Inter and eight behind Barcelona. They’ll need several things to break right in the group stage if they don’t want to join fellow North Londoners Arsenal and Chelsea in the Europa League. They’ll hope to shake off their continental struggles to continue their domestic challenge.
