In the spirit of Halloween, looking at the tricks and treats — the disappointing and the pleasantly surprising — of the 2018 college football season.
Halloween is upon us, which obviously means trick-or-treating, candy, parties, costumes and much more throughout the United States and beyond. However, in the world of college football, it also means that we’re entering the home stretch of the regular season. We’re coming into Week 10 of the season and, with the initial College Football Playoff rankings having been released, the postseason picture is starting to take a much clearer shape.
In the initial rankings for the CFP, it’s the Alabama Crimson Tide, Clemson Tigers, LSU Tigers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish that would make it into the Playoff if the season ended today. However, with big games for all of these teams still looming and with the Georgia Bulldogs and Michigan Wolverines looming behind them, things could get shaken up in a big way.
But really, things have been getting shaken up from Week 1 up to this point. When a given season begins, we can offer conjecture about what we think we know and what we believe will happen, but it’s never 100 percent accurate. There are always surprises to take into account, both for the positive and the negative. It’s the variance that makes this sport so great.
With it being Halloween and with the season closing in on completion, though, it feels like the proper time to look back on those surprises, both good and bad. We’re going to look at 25 of the biggest tricks and treats from the 2018 season thus far.
We’ll start perhaps with the biggest treat of all, one Tua Tagovailoa.
