In the last episode before the Mayans MC season 1 finale, everyone’s cards were put on the table. Here is your “Serpiente/Chikchan” recap.
Lincoln Potter does not give a ****! Don’t get it twisted, though. He’s a genius. He says and does absolutely anything he needs to say or do to get what he wants and he does it without even a hint of emotion. He is brilliant.
When EZ and Angel were stuck in a prison cell after last episode’s trip to the desert, Potter wasted no time cutting himself another involuntary deal. In the process of discussing what he needed from the Reyes brothers, he completely sold out EZ to Angel, letting him in on the entire reason EZ was out in the first place: to inform on the Galindo Cartel.
Angel is understandably hurt. His brother reached out to him, asked him to be a part of the MC and has been by his side ever since. The deceit would be difficult to handle after finding out what the actual plan was, but Angel’s grudge-holding goes a little too far through the episode.
Did Angel suddenly forget that he was the rat with the rebels? Potter was sure to tell Angel that he and the club were exempt from any wrongdoing because of EZ, so surely that eases the pain of being lied to, right? Apparently not. After they are released from prison, Angel beats the crap out of EZ and leaves him in the desert to walk home. Again, this is the same guy who put the entire club in jeopardy a few weeks ago, right?

The cartel/rebel super-group
Everyone is working with everyone and the MC is the main beneficiary. Let’s quickly recap: Adelita struck a deal with Miguel to work with the Galindo Cartel in the last episode. Her goal is to control the chaos caused by drug/cartel violence.
Lincoln Potter and the DOJ struck their own deal with Miguel. Their main objective is taking out the rebel army, as the rebels cannot be controlled and they are too much of a wild card for Potter and his men. Potter doesn’t know that Galindo is working with the rebels.
Here’s where the Mayans come in. At a back-room casino meeting between the Mayans, Galindo cartel and Adelita, Miguel revealed he and Emily’s master plan. The three parties would work together, which was mutually beneficial to all of them. The Mayans MC would serve as middle-man, to keep both the rebels and the cartel honest with each other.
This is a huge step up from drug running, as the Mayans now hold the keys to the Ferrari that is a cartel/rebel super group. This also works out very well for Angel, who was working with both sides before the merger. He no longer needs to keep secrets from the club. Well, secrets pertaining to the rebels, that is.
Devante pays the ultimate price
What started as a lie to his boss ended up being the ultimate demise for Miguel’s right hand man and key adviser, Devante.
A few episodes back, when mini-Christobal was kidnapped, Devante and Dita told Miguel that his older brother was a victim of kidnapping and death-by-cartel. This was all a lie, to try to nudge Miguel in the right direction while dealing with the rebels.
When the DOJ overturns every inch of Miguel’s house, Emily finds the hospital records from his older brother Christobal, who died of pneumonia, not cartel violence. This immediately puts Devante in Miguel’s cross-hairs.
As fate would have it, Devante was also the leader of the execution squad that murdered Adelita’s family. With his recent betrayal and his differing views from Miguel, he was the obvious choice to be offered up as a trust-building sacrifice to the rebels.
Devante was driven out to a secluded area where he had some kind final words for Miguel and his family before getting his head removed via machete by Adelita. Before dying, he makes sure Miguel knows that his mother Dita was forced to lie and that he was the one who convinced her, clearing her name and avoiding a more difficult confrontation for Miguel. Good guy Devante.
Back to Angel and EZ
Angel is clearly still shook from finding out about his brother. He’s also not too happy about the situation he’s now in, having to work with EZ to appease Potter’s wishes. After the four Mayans working with the rebels got new snake tattoos, Angel was quick to point out that the ink would serve as a reminder to EZ of what he did to him.
Again, Angel, you did put EZ, the MC and your entire group of family and friends at risk by cutting a deal with the rebels in the first place. It all worked out in the end, but isn’t this still a case of the pot calling the kettle black?
Angel still cares for EZ though and he let’s him know that he’s family first all the way. He tells EZ that once the deal with Potter is over, that’s it for EZ and the Mayans. He’s out. No more MC, no more Santo Padre.
It’s hard to tell if he’s saying this because he still feels betrayed or because he knows EZ is set up to do better things. Perhaps it’s a bit of both.
Other notable exchanges
EZ and Emily: After the casino meeting, Emily takes a moment to talk to EZ about what she saw in Potter’s office in the last episode. She warns him that he isn’t going to tear her family apart, and that it’s over between them.
“Don’t make me choose” were her exact words to EZ, implying that he wouldn’t be chosen. This seems like some big-time foreshadowing that she will be made to choose at some point.
Goodbye Priest: Part two of Adelita’s revenge tour includes the priest guilty of selling out her family to Devante’s hit squad. He thinks he is in the clear at first after discussing his danger with the cartel in the last episode, however, he doesn’t know about the deal between Adelita and Miguel.
Our priest has his computer filled with child pornography before a staged hanging is set up in his chambers. Just like that, Adelita’s past troubles are wrapped up and she can focus on future ventures with the cartel and the Mayans MC.
Jiminez is in trouble: The episode ends with a text from Potter to the Reyes brothers. The first task they are hit with is to murder their cousin, Jiminez. He made it clear that he wasn’t going to work with Potter in the last episode and tried his best to protect the deal EZ had in place.
Now, EZ has to be the one to “kill him.” We’re all hoping that doesn’t happen, because Jiminez is a good person who just wants to relax with his family, but if EZ wants keep himself out of trouble, he’s going to have a tough decision to make in the next episode.
