It’s Halloween and that means time to trick-or-treat. But where, generally, can you go door-to-door?

Sure, you may think trick-or-treating is intuitive. You (or more accurately, your kiddo) just go door-to-door in your neighborhood or your apartment building, decked out in costume, buzz and/or knock, smile, collect your candy. But as any astute and experienced trick-or-treater can tell you, there is a real art to this. There are places with better

The short answer here is: You can trick-or-treat anywhere houses have decorations and lights on. (If the lights are off and there is nary a tissue-paper ghost to be seen, perhaps leave those people in peace. Halloween is clearly not their thing, and they probably won’t have any good candy anyways.) You should also feel encouraged to trick-or-treat beyond your neighborhood. Anyone who says you have to be confined to your school district, or doesn’t want to give candy to kids from a neighborhood away is a jerk.

It is, however, worth acknowledging that trick-or-treating is still something intended for children. You can go trick-or-treat as an adult, but also, there are other ways to get a mixed bag of candy. (Have you heard of variety packs?) Go Nov. 1. At midnight even! You’re an adult, so you’ll be up. Teens are a tad more tricky, on account of the fact they are often older with intentions less pure than sugar. That said, plenty of teens do just think it’s fun to dress up and hang out together, collecting some sweet treats. They certainly don’t deserve to go to jail, Virginia.

For the pro-tips and best neighborhoods, head to your city’s friendly subreddit or try a local paper. There, you will find the best insights, down to the exact streets passing out the good stuff. Godspeed.
