College Football Results Against The Spread Week 9 2018

I think I had a bad week. I have that premonition most weeks, but as I was trying to stream a lot of my college football Saturday from the horrendously long lines at Walt Disney World, the greatest stanchion of the abuse of American capitalism, I also had to frantically check just what I had picked. Long story short, the internet there isn’t great due to the sheer volume of people trying to use it. I was fortunate for what I had. From what I’ve seen so far from those horrendously long lines, I may have had one of my worst weeks ever.

I had a solid week in ESPN College Pick Em. My only real mistake was having faith in Texas. That’s going to hurt me here as well. It will be how I did in the less than marquee games that decides how bad this week really was.

Here we will recap my picks against the spread. The winner against the spread will be in BOLD. My result will follow. Let’s get to it!

BLACKSBURG, VA – OCTOBER 25: Quarterback Tobias Oliver #8 of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets avoids the tackle of defensive lineman Emmanuel Belmar #40 of the Virginia Tech Hokies in the first half at Lane Stadium on October 25, 2018 in Blacksburg, Virginia. We had a big 11 game slate before Saturday even began!

Troy(-12.5) at South Alabama: HIT! Yeah, Troy’s still good. Or USA is still bad. Call it a combination platter of both.

Baylor at West Virginia(-13.5): HIT! Wow, Baylor’s offense looked really bad with Jalan McClendon back there. Really bad. Of course, the Bears were threatening to get buried even before Brewer went down.

Ball State at Ohio(-10.5): MISS! So much for that Ball State offense being able to play with anyone….

Toledo at Western Michigan(-6.5): MISS! It has become passe to change quarterbacks lately. The Rockets are just the latest team is has worked for. Well, until Saturday.

Appalachian State(-8.5) at Georgia Southern: MISS! Zac Thomas was hurt on the first series of the game. So were Appalachian’s chances at winning, let alone covering.

Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech(-3.5): MISS! Tobias Oliver is a bad man….in a good way. Watch him. You wont be disappointed unless he happens to be carving up your favorite team.

Louisiana Tech at Florida Atlantic(-3.5): MISS! This was not the fault of Devin Singletary. Usually when he gets 171 rushing yards, the Owls win.

Miami(FL)(-3.5) at Boston College: HIT! How far has Miami fallen? We don’t really know yet, but Mark Richt’s pants have to be getting really toasty right now.

Indiana(-2.5) at Minnesota: MISS! Minnesota did everything they could to give this game away, but I will say that there is no way Zack Annexstad could have completed that game winning pass. The guard has changed in Minneapolis.

Wyoming at Colorado State(-2.5): HIT! This was easy money. Trust me, I’ll need it.

Utah(-9.5) at UCLA: HIT! This was an absolute beatdown by the Utah defense. Never mind what the offense did. The defense is the heart of this team.

AMES, IA – OCTOBER 27: Quarterback Brock Purdy #15 of the Iowa State Cyclones celebrates with teammates quarterback Kyle Kempt #17, and linebacker Mike Rose #23 of the Iowa State Cyclones after defeating the Texas Tech Red Raiders 40-31 at Jack Trice Stadium on October 27, 2018 in Ames, Iowa. Clemson(-16.5) at Florida State: MISS!  Well, that was a statement win. Not that Florida State is any good, but rivarly games usually mean something. This meant nothing to the prideless Seminoles.

Wisconsin(-6.5) at Northwestern: HIT! This wasn’t because Hornibrook didn’t play. The Wisconsin offense looked decent enough. The defense was another story.

Vanderbilt(-1.5) at Arkansas: HIT! Many were fooled by the Piggie awakening last week. Not me.

Texas Tech at Iowa State(-3.5) HIT! I flipped this one right before kickoff. I’m glad I did, and glad I never changed it on Pick Em to begin with.

Wake Forest at Louisville(-3.5): MISS! I wasn’t fooled by Arkansas, but fell hook, line, and sinker for an absolutely awful Louisville team. Why do I do this to myself?

Massachusetts(-4.5) at Connecticut: MISS! The UConn defense played an awful fourth quarter to let this get away. Oh, and they should definitely feel horrible for losing to UMass…..AT HOME!

Army at Eastern Michigan(EVEN): HIT! It’s going to be hard to bet against Army for any reason. This team is tough and resilient.

Purdue at Michigan State(-1.5): MISS! If I would have known that the Spartans were going to but bait with Lewerke, I would have switched my pick. It literally doesn’t matter who they replaced him with. This was a long time coming.

Central Michigan at Akron(-4.5): HIT! There was no wild finish or anything like that. This was a dull game, and not just by MAC standards. A ho hum win for Akron, but still a win.

North Carolina at Virginia(-8.5): HIT! More easy money in the early games!

Southern Mississippi at Charlotte: HIT! This new relationship that I have with Charlotte is going to take my game to a whole new level.

Coastal Carolina(-3.5) at Georgia State: HIT! Well, the Chanticleers did win outright, but the half came through for me this time.

TCU(-13.5) at Kansas: MISS! This was the first win for Kansas over the Toadies since 1997. It was also the first time the Jayhawks led in a conference game this year. The three wins for Kansas this year already matches the total from the last three years combined! Can you imagine if they had won the opener against Nicholls State?

Oregon State at Colorado(-24.5): MISS! I knew better. I knew Oregon State was switching quarterbacks and I ignored it anyway.

Florida vs. Georgia(-6.5) at Jacksonville: MISS! I overestimated the Florida defense, I guess.

Kansas State at Oklahoma(-24.5): MISS! Well, the defense looked better. Of course, I’m still not scared of that Kansas State offense.

Iowa at Penn State(-6.5): HIT! I’m almost embarrassed to take this as a win. Iowa really had no business keeping this game within six.

South Florida at Houston(-7.5): HIT! D’Eriq King should have been a household name before now. This was his coming out party for those of you still not in the know.

Arizona State at USC(-6.5): MISS! Manny Watkins can still look good from time to time. So much for the USC defense……

Illinois at Maryland(-18.5): MISS! I’m embarrassed to miss this because I damn sure knew better.

Duke(-2.5) at Pittsburgh: MISS! How about that Duke defense? Actually, both defenses should be ashamed of this one. The ACC turned into the Big 12(10) here with 99 combined points, including 16 in the final quarter for Pitt to steal this.

Middle Tennessee State(-4.5) at Old Dominion: MISS! Told you…..

Northern Illinois at BYU(-7.5) HIT! This was a big defensive battler here, much like I thought it would be.

Cincinnati(-9.5) at SMU: MISS! Giving up 20 points isn’t bad these days. I’m still shocked that SMU held the Bearcats to 26, but I did think the Cincy defense was going to be at least a little better than this.

Kentucky at Missouri(-6.5): HIT! Snell played, Kentucky won, all is right in the world. That almost wasn’t the case. Kentucky really needed luck on their side to take this one home.

New Mexico at Utah State(-20.5): HIT! Wow, the Aggies are explosive. At least they are against inferior teams.

Rice at North Texas(-28.5): MISS! That’s what I hate about spreads like this. The Mean Green dominated this game and still didn’t cover.

Washington(-11.5) at California: HIT! I didn’t expect Washington to lose outright, but I really didn’t expect them to not even score 12! Great defense by Cal in this one.

UNLV at San Jose State(-3.5): MISS! How bad is UNLV? They lost by double digits to a winless team….

Washington State at Stanford(-3.5): HIT! A Pac 12 title in is sight for the Leaches. Cracking the playoff will be a much tougher proposition.

More from College Football Odds

Texas A&M at Mississippi State(-2.5): MISS! Where was the Jimbo magic in this one? Apparently it doesn’t work against excessive cowbells.

North Carolina State(-2.5) at Syracuse: HIT! Eric Dungey is still doing most of the heavy lifting here, and doing it well. That Syracuse D needs some work though.

Boise State(-9.5) at Air Force: MISS! Stupid half! Silly me. I was actually expecting Air Force to play some D here…..

Arkansas State(-3.5) at Louisiana: MISS! WHACK! I knew it!

Tulane at Tulsa(-1.5): HIT! This was definitely one worth watching. It didn’t have all the crazy elements that I expected, but it was entertaining none the less.

New Mexico State at Texas State(-2.5): MISS! I probably knew better, but there are one point bets for a reason. If there was a zero bet, this game would have been one of them.

UAB(-16.5) at UTEP: HIT! That is three shutouts in eight games for UAB. Who do they think they are, Michigan?

Tennessee at South Carolina(-7.5): MISS! This should count as a loss for the Cocks.

Florida International(-4.5) at Western Kentucky: HIT! At least I know I learned one thing last week.

Notre Dame(-23.5) vs. Navy at San Diego: HIT! I am surprised that Navy didn’t keep this closer, but a win is a win, and I need it.

Texas(-3.5) at Oklahoma State: MISS! I almost changed this after watching the talking heads on GameDay. I expected a Texas stumble somewhere, but I didn’t see them getting blown off the field.

Oregon(-9.5) at Arizona: MISS! There is losing. Then there is losing to teams that you shouldn’t lose to. Then there is losing a game in which you were a big favorite. This is somewhere way below that. What an uninspired mess of a game by Oregon. Not only was the defense awful. I can accept that. The putrid offense against one of the worst defenses in the Pac 12 is something else all together.

Hawaii at Fresno State(-24.5): MISS! Nice defense, Hawaii. Nice defense.

San Diego State(-2.5) at Nevada: MISS! Well, I guess I didn’t learn that much from last week. I need to quit picking SDSU and Hawaii.

JACKSONVILLE, FL – OCTOBER 21: A Jacksonville Jaguars fan dressed up as Spider-Man looks on in disappointment following the Jaguars 20-7 loss to the Houston Texans at TIAA Bank Field on October 21, 2018 in Jacksonville, Florida. (Photo by Scott Halleran/Getty Images) /

A good Pick Em week didn’t mean a lot here. I finished at 25-30, bad enough to drop me under .500 for the first time this year. I am now at 235-238 on the season and am pretty salty with myself over some of those picks.

I am certain I lost points again this week. How many? Let’s check the damage…..

This week’s totals follow the number. The season totals are in parentheses.

1. 2-2 (42-33) = 9
2. 8-11 (93-95) = -4
3. 9-10 (62-63) = -3
4. 4-3 (25-30) = -20
5. 2-4 (13-17) = -20

My five point picks are still severely lacking. I lost another 15 betting points to put me 38 in the hole for this season. My strong 2017 is getting farther and farther away here. I need to start coming up big before this season gets away from me. I will have a great chance to do that with a massive betting week this week!
