Arsenal 1-1 Liverpool: Premier League highlights and recap
By Warren Pegg
Arsenal and Liverpool drew 1-1 in the Premier League on Saturday. Here are all the highlights from the match.
Arsenal and Liverpool played out an entertaining, end-to-end draw at the Emirates on Sunday, as Unai Emery’s side showed how much they’ve improved since their last match against big six opposition, in the first month of the season.
Arsenal started the better of the two sides, pegging Liverpool deep in their own half in the early stages. Alexandre Lacazette had an opportunity to open the scoring after only four minutes, but his flick at the near post was smothered by Alisson.
Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang, who caused a lot of problems for Trent Alexander-Arnold on the left wing, went close after 15 minutes, but Joe Gomez recovered in time to send his shot wide of the post.
Arsenal’s best chance of the half came shortly after, when Henrikh Mkhitaryan almost caught out Alisson, who had charged off his line to try to clear a cross, but couldn’t direct his header on target.
While Arsenal played the better soccer and controlled possession, Liverpool had the better of the chances. They had the ball in the back of the net in the 18th minute, but Sadio Mane was incorrectly ruled offside.
Their other big chances both fell to Virgil van Dijk, who hit straight at Bernd Leno when clean through on goal midway through the half and hit the post with a header in the 45th minute, with Leno stranded.
The second half followed a similar pattern, with Arsenal playing better overall but Liverpool creating the better chances. The Reds took the lead through on the hour mark, James Milner finishing well from the top of the box after Leno failed to fully clear a Mane cross.
Arsenal almost responded immediately, but Lucas Torreira hit his shot straight at Alisson after a nice run through midfield. Still, the reaction was reflective of a performance that showed how far the Gunners have come in a short space of time under Emery.
And when they did eventually equalize, no one could say they didn’t deserve it. Lacazette scored the goal, running onto an excellent ball by Alex Iwobi before turning away from Alisson and curling a shot in at the far post.
Highlights
The draw moves Liverpool into first place, a point ahead of Manchester City, who play on Sunday. Arsenal stay fourth.
