Here’s what you need to know about Oklahoma and Texas Tech meeting in a primetime Big 12 showdown on Saturday.
The Oklahoma Sooners will look to stay in the Big 12 title hunt when they head to Lubbock to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders this weekend. Two years ago, both of these teams combined for over 1,000 total yards as the Sooners edged the Red Raiders 66-59 in a shootout. Lincoln Riley and Ruffin McNeill return to where they coached under Mike Leach facing an improved Kliff Kingsbury led squad.
Since their upset loss to Texas in the Red River Rivalry, Oklahoma has looked unstoppable the last two weeks. A 52-27 win over TCU and a 51-14 demolition over Kansas State has the Sooners sitting at 7-1, ranked No. 7 in the country. Kyler Murray has flashed his Heisman potential with 2,329 yards, 28 touchdowns and only three interceptions on the season.
While the offense has been on a tear, Oklahoma’s defense has continued to have issues, costing Mike Stoops his job. With McNeill now in control, the Sooners hope to take the next step and challenge for a national championship.
Texas Tech has exceeded expectations so far this season as Kliff Kingsbury could very well be coaching for his job. The Red Raiders are 5-3 and looking to become bowl eligible in back-to-back seasons. The biggest surprise has been the emergence of freshman quarterback Alan Bowman who has thrown for 2,411 yards and 15 touchdowns on the year.
Defensive coordinator David Gibbs has also continued to improve a unit that was ranked last in the country two years ago. The Red Raiders are only allowing 283.4 passing yards and 140.4 rushing yards per game. A far cry from what they were last time Oklahoma came to the Jones. After a disappointing loss to Iowa State in Ames last week, Texas Tech will look to turn it around at home under the lights.
Saturday night’s game will be nationally televised on ABC, meaning this one can also be streamed WatchESPN.
