After re-signing Brett Gardner the Yankees have eight free agents remaining. Which of these stars will be back in Pinstripes for the 2019 season?
Brian Cashman and the Yankees front office have a lot of tough decisions to make this winter. The fate of the teamās eight remaining free agents might not get the same attention as potential free agent signings, but those decisions could be just as important.
Thereās little question that some guys will leave and some will go. The question is which guys will come back. Part of that will be determined by the free agency market, but the organizationās desire to keep their own players will be a larger factor in most cases.
In this piece, weāre going to walk you through each playerās chances of returning to the Bronx next season. Weāll start by walking you through the starting pitchers who may return next season
Lance Lynn
Lynn is an intriguing option for the front office because he can be a decent option as a starter or reliever. Unfortunately, he doesnāt profile as an above average option at either spot.
Itās also very likely that Lynn will be looking to sign with a team that will guarantee him a spot in their starting rotation in 2019. There are absolutely teams out there who will give him that kind of assurance, but the Yankees arenāt one of them.
As such, itās very unlikely that Lynn is going to come back to the Yankees next year. At best, heās an option that Cashman and company will consider if they miss out on quite a few superior pitchers. Itās possible Lynn could return if heās still available late in the process, but he didnāt really do enough for the Yankees last season to return. Expect him to sign a reasonably sized deal with a team who wants him to be an average starter who can eat some innings.
