Joey Logano has already crashed the party for the Championship 4, and Texas provides another opportunity for the remaining playoff drivers to shake up the expected title battle.

So the final showdown for the NASCAR Cup Series championship at Homestead is going to be the Big 3 and one other driver, maybe Chase Elliott or Clint Bowyer, right? As Lee Corso would say if he covered NASCAR instead of college football, no so fast, my friends. Joey Logano has already muscled his way into the title picture, and now the AAA Texas 500 could be the chance someone else needs to sneak into the hunt.

Someone like, say, Aric Almirola, who starts the day at Texas Motor Speedway fourth and has already won during the playoffs. Or his Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kurt Busch, who rolls off not much further back in seventh. A victory by either driver would mean one less spot in the Championship 4 based on points, which would knock one of the Big 3 out — unless one of them is the winner.

The one with the most to lose is Martin Truex Jr., who came so agonizingly close at Martinsville before his tango with Logano, but he will have to start from the rear of the field after an engine change. His attempt to charge to the front for a key win will be among the top storylines to watch.

Next. Hailie Deegan staying patient even as she craves more NASCAR success. dark
