8. Mark Turgeon, Maryland

Maryland missed the NCAA Tournament last year, and they have advanced beyond the round of 32 just once in three tournament berths over seven seasons under Turgeon. The FBI investigation into college basketball is circling around the program, more specifically assistant coach Bino Ranson and his involvement in the recruitment of a couple players, but Turgeon was confident no wrongdoing would be found.

The move to the Big Ten worked for Terrapin’s men’s basketball, with a 28-7 record right out of the gate in 2014-15. But the win total has progressively dropped since, and things have to turn back up after last year’s 19 wins and an 8-10 mark in the Big Ten.

During Turgeon’s tenure (h/t to Busting Brackets), the Terrapins have not beaten a ranked opponent on the road (0-16) and they are just 8-32 overall against ranked opponents. For a program with some level of expectation to be a contender in the Big Ten, and a desire to be a factor nationally to some degree, that’s simply not good enough.

This is shaping up to be a pivotal season for Turgeon at Maryland. A second straight year without going to the NCAA Tournament would probably seal his fate.
