10 college basketball coaches on the hottest seats entering 2018-2019
7. Sean Miller, Arizona
At first glance, Miller’s .769 winning percentage going into his 10th season at Arizona would make him as secure in his job as any coach in college basketball. But the Wildcats have consistently underachieved in the postseason, including two first-round NCAA Tournament exits in the last three years.
On top of that, the FBI investigation into college hoops has swirled around the Arizona program. Miller was not allowed to coach a game in February, as allegations of a payment to Deandre Ayton surfaced. And just last week, Arizona’s Board of regents was still “aggressively pursuing the facts” in the recruiting scandal around Miller.
Board of Regents member Bill Ridenour said Miller’s job is not in jeopardy, but board chair Ron Shoopman wasn’t willing to declare that.
"We never made a statement to that effect,” “We are as concerned as you are, but you have our pledge that we will take action when action is warranted,"
Apart from any ongoing on-court underachievement to put his job in jeopardy, Miller is feeling extra heat based on alleged misdeeds in recruiting that have some reported evidenced attached to them. If that smokes turns into a real fire, the possibility of an NCAA suspension for Miller could very well turn into Arizona firing him with cause.
