Halfway through the group stage, Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid are cruising to the knockout stage. Dortmund are first in the group after smoking Atletico 4-0 in their last game. Atletico are second in the group with six points, five more than Club Brugge and Monaco. On Tuesday, Atletico host Dortmund at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.
Atletico Madrid have been cruising in La Liga, picking up points in eight straight games. Despite the strong start, Diego Simeone’s team are third in La Liga, four points behind Barcelona. In their last game, Atleti drew 1-1 with Leganes. The draw was Atletico’s fourth away from Wanda Metropolitano Stadium. While Atletico have struggled in their away games, they have been much better at home, winning four of five games. Simeone’s side are again very strong defensively but struggle to score goals. Scoring goals could be difficult against Dortmund with Diego Costa still sidelined with an injury. Costa will not be the only key player that Atleti will be without, Diego Godin and Koke are both dealing with injuries and could miss Tuesday’s game.
Dortmund can win the group with a win on Tuesday. The Bundesliga side are undefeated this season, picking up points in all of their games this season. Dortmund defeated Wolfsburg 1-0 over the weekend, extending their lead in the Bundesliga to four points. Marco Reus scored his sixth goal of the season and has been one of the best players in Germany. In the first meeting, Real Madrid loanee Achraf Hakimi had a breakout game. The 19-year-old assisted on the first three goals and should again play a large role in Tuesday’s game as Dortmund look to use their speed to take advantage of an older Atletico side.
