Benfica face Ajax at the Estadio da Luz on Wednesday, Nov. 7. Here’s all the info you need to watch.

After a run of four successive Portuguese titles, Benfica only managed a second-placed finish last season, with the departures of Ederson, Nelson Semedo and Victor Lindelof in the summer of 2017 — to Manchester City, Barcelona and Manchester United respectively — certainly contributing to the club’s dip in form. Benfica won this tournament twice in the early 1960s but have failed to lift the trophy since, despite reaching the final again on five occasions, most recently in 1990 when they lost to Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan. They’ve also made it to the Europa League final twice in recent years, only to be defeated by Chelsea in 2013 and then Sevilla a year later.

The club have been Champions League regulars since the late 1990s and have participated in the group stages in every year of the current decade, reaching the quarter-finals in 2012 and 2016, although they finished bottom of their group last season. They could potentially suffer the same fate in this campaign as well, having been outplayed by Bayern in their first group game, earned a lucky win against AEK Athens and then been deservedly beaten by Ajax in their last match.

In contrast, Ajax looked very impressive while dispatching Dynamo Kiev in the final qualification round and they’ve continued that good form in the group stages, convincingly beating AEK in their opening match before earning a deserved draw in Munich and then defeating tonight’s opponents in Amsterdam.

While young center-back Matthijs de Ligt and midfielder Frenkie de Jong look set for big-money moves in the near future, there are plenty of talented older heads in the squad as well. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar might be 35 years old, but he’s still a threat at this level, and Daley Blind looks happier and more comfortable than he ever did at Manchester United. Dusan Tadic also seems rejuvenated after swapping England for the Netherlands, with seven goals and four assists already this season, and Hakim Ziyech, impressive for a luckless Morocco side at the World Cup in the summer, has also impressed.

With Ajax already four points ahead and an away tie against Bayern coming up next for Benfica, this seems to be a must-win game for the Portuguese side.
