After three games, Real Madrid and Roma are tied for first in Group G with six points. CSKA Moscow are two points behind Real and Roma, while Viktoria Plzen are last with only one point. However, the group could look very different after the reverse fixtures on Wednesday. In the first game, Roma defeated CSKA 3-0 in the Italian capital. The two teams go to the Russian capital for a game that could determine which club advances to the knockout stage and which club will be relegated to Europa League.
CSKA Moscow have struggled domestically, picking up only eight points in their last six games, dropping them to fifth in the table. The inconsistent form domestically has carried over to the Champions League. CSKA were lucky to draw with Viktoria Plzen in their first game before shocking Real Madrid in their second game. In their third game, CSKA were easily beaten by Roma. Keeper Igor Akinfeev returns for CSKA after serving a suspension after being sent off against Real Madrid. Akinfeev will be a sizeable upgrade over Ilya Pomazun, who started in his place. Up front, CSKA will rely on Fedor Chalov and Nikola Vlasic, who are their leading scorers this season, combining for 14 goals in all competitions.
After losing their first game of the group stage 3-0 to Real Madrid, Roma rebounded with 5-0 and 3-0 wins against Viktoria Plzen and CSKA Moscow. While Eusebio Di Francesco’s side have played well in the Champions League, they have struggled lately in Serie A. Roma have only two points in their last three games, dropping to ninth in the table. Di Francesco will turn to Edin Dzeko for another big performance against CSKA. Dzeko scored twice against CSKA and leads all Champions League goal scorers with five goals. The Bosnia-Herzegovina striker has been on an incredible run in the Champions League dating back to last season, Dzeko has scored 13 goals in his last 15 games.
