After three games, Manchester City are first in their group with six points, one point ahead of Lyon. The Citizens look to build their lead in the group on Wednesday against Shakhtar Donetsk at Etihad Stadium. City defeated Shakhtar 3-0 in the last Champions League game for both clubs.
Manchester City continued their undefeated start to the Premier League season over the weekend, smashing Southampton 6-1. The win pushed City two points clear of Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table. Sergio Aguero scored against Southampton, giving him a club-best 10 goals in all competitions this season. Aguero will likely get the start against Shakhtar after being left on the bench in the previous meeting. With a wealth of attacking options, Pep Guardiola has multiple options he can start in the front three on Wednesday.
Shakhtar Donetsk hold an eight-point lead in their domestical league after winning 10 of 11 games and picking up 31 points since losing their only game of the season. In the Champions League, Shakhtar drew against Lyon and Hoffenheim. Paulo Fonseca’s side can get out of the group but they will need to take points from City and hope that Lyon drop points. Shakhtar will have to slow down the City attack and limit the number of chances. In their domestic league, Shakhtar have conceded only seven goals in 14 games. However, they have also conceded seven goals in their three Champions League games. If Fonseca’s side are going to take points from City they will need a big game from Junior Moraes. The Brazilian striker leads the club with 14 goals in all competitions this season.
