Mayans MC recap: EZ commits to the club in season 1 finale
The Mayans MC season finale was filled with both action and answers. Here’s a full breakdown of the final episode of season 1.
Happy Lowman (David LaBrava) is back. For those of you who don’t remember (or didn’t watch) Sons of Anarchy, Happy is a crazy lunatic from Sons’ California chapter with no regard for human life. He was a very well liked character in SOA, but that is seemingly going to change for Mayans fans.
First, let’s focus on the massive shocker from the first half of the finale. EZ and Angel were tasked to “eliminate” their cousin and former DEA agent Kevin Jiminez, who posed a problem for the ever-so-sneaky Lincoln Potter.
If you thought that Jiminez was going to get away, or that they would fake the murder to avoid killing off a hero, you’ve forgotten how Kurt Sutter runs his television shows. Initially, Felipe wants to get this done for his kids, but he holds back, telling Jiminez to go North and be with his family. He later tells Angel that he couldn’t do it because he “isn’t that person anymore.”
While Felipe showed compassion and restraint, both Angel and EZ had other feelings about the task. Angel was the first to confront Jiminez, knowing that what he had to do was bigger than him and his cousin. He arrived minutes before EZ, who may have saved his life by jumping in and killing Jiminez’ old boss, Bowen (Curtiss Cook), who was there to meet with Jiminez over lunch.
Side note: Can we discuss how quick EZ’s trigger is when it comes to police? He’s still learning the ropes in this new world of violence and crime but he has the quickest trigger finger on Earth when it comes to police officers. Hopefully this doesn’t get him into any more trouble in the future.
Thankfully for EZ and Angel, this time might have saved both of their lives. Angel had no idea that Jiminez’ DEA parter was there and would have likely been killed if EZ hadn’t shown up. EZ took down Bowen and before Jiminez could even get a word in, Angel finished the job.
Lincoln wasn’t pleased about the extra casualty, but the deed being done was enough for him to erase EZ’s record from whatever crime database holds all of the criminal information. He did, however, tell EZ that “he owes him one” which means more trouble is likely coming for EZ (and we get to enjoy more of the brilliant/frustrating Potter).
Angel is having a much harder time dealing with this entire situation than EZ is. He’s in a dark place, and he makes it known to both his love interest Adelita and his father Felipe. When Angel tells Felipe that he took care of Jiminez, Felipe immediately asks about how EZ is doing. This obviously frustrates Angel, who feels as though he has been taking a backseat to EZ his whole life. Clayton Cardenas does an incredible job portraying the pain that his character Angel is going through, all for his brother, who he thinks he is forcing out of the Mayans MC world after his record is erased.
Bishop’s important meetings
Unfortunately for Angel, EZ is always one step ahead. Nearing the end of the episode, Bishop has two very significant discussions. One with Marcus Alvarez and one with EZ. While we think that EZ is meeting to get out of the M.C. business, he is actually asking Bishop to sponsor him, saying that the family issues between him and Angel are starting to weigh-in on his sponsorship and that this should not decide his fate. Angel now has no choice but to watch his brother get patched in with the club (we presume, eventually).
The meeting with Alvarez was a tough one for Bishop. One of his best friends and closest allies is moving up in the world of crime. With Devante out of the picture, Miguel Galindo needs a new adviser. In steps the trustworthy, experienced Miguel Galindo. This is great for us, as it means Alvarez, the Sons and Mayans regular will be much more involved in future seasons of the show as Galindo’s right hand man.
The final moments of season 1
Back to Happy. He and a couple other Sons are in town to strike up a gun deal for future operations. The Mayans host a party, one which both Happy and EZ attend. At first, most of us were happy to see Happy, a Sons regular and series favorite, until EZ’s photographic memories came back to haunt us all.
In the final missing piece of EZ’s memories about getting revenge for his mother’s death, we find out who the escaped alleged murderer was. After shooting the police officer, EZ ignores police warnings and chases after the person he believes killed his mother. Before getting arrested, he gets a glimpse of the killer’s face. It’s Happy.
Whether Happy is the Reyes mother’s murderer or not is yet to be discovered. Perhaps he was on his way to dispose of the vehicle, or perhaps the vehicle was stolen. Either way, Happy will be a key piece in EZ figuring out how and why the murder happened.
Most importantly, EZ is currently standing across the Mayans MC yard from the person who he thinks killed his mother, leaving us with the cliffhanger of a lifetime. The beginning of next season is sure to provide fireworks, as surely EZ will confront Happy and find out the truth about his mother.
Other important moments from the finale
There are some key takeaways from this incredible episode. Potter is obviously going to play a large role in the next season. He now has (well, thinks he has) control over the Galindo Cartel and can put his plans in place to take on the rebels. Little does he know, Adelita and Miguel are also partners and Miguel, now partnered with Alvarez as well, has no intention of making life easy for Potter.
Other Sons favorites will also be prominent characters in season 2. Both Alvarez and Happy are looking poised to be series regulars, with key story lines surrounding both of them. This is great for the Sons of Anarchy fans who are enjoying Mayans and any fans who might not have seen Sons, as these two characters are both easy to love (in some capacity).
Finally, things might be going too well for Adelita and the rebels. In a scene with Adelita is speaking to “her little mouse,” who is uncomfortable living in a home and not in a tent, saying things like “what if we need to get away?” Adelita assures her they are safe, and later finds her sleeping on the floor instead of in the bed provided.
This could be foreshadowing, as things are good for the rebels at the moment, but who knows what the future holds. They are still wanted by Potter and his group, and surely Miguel is still a little upset about his baby being stolen mere weeks ago.
If there’s one thing fans of showrunner/creator Kurt Sutter know, it’s to never get too comfortable.
