College Football Results Against The Spread Week 10 2018
I think I had a bad week. I have that premonition most weeks, but as I was trying to stream a lot of my college football Saturday from the horrendously long lines at Walt Disney World, the greatest stanchion of the abuse of American capitalism, I also had to frantically check just what I had picked. Long story short, the internet there isn’t great due to the sheer volume of people trying to use it. I was fortunate for what I had. From what I’ve seen so far from those horrendously long lines, I may have had one of my worst weeks ever.
I had a solid week in ESPN College Pick Em. My only real mistake was having faith in Texas. That’s going to hurt me here as well. It will be how I did in the less than marquee games that decides how bad this week really was.
Here we will recap my picks against the spread. The winner against the spread will be in BOLD. My result will follow. Let’s get to it!
In case you want to follow along:
Tuesday-Friday
Picks for week 10
Let’s check the damage from this week.
Kent State at Bowling Green(-1.5): HIT! Taking Bowling Green is usually a losing bet. I wont say this was easy, but it definitely looked off.
Miami(OH) at Buffalo(-6.5): HIT! Miami gave Buffalo all they wanted, just like I expected. This was a great game. Hope you watched it.
Ball State at Toledo(-18.5): MISS! I really should have changed this pick after Ohio mauled the Cardinals. The joke’s on me.
Ohio at Western Michigan(-1.5): HIT! It was blowout city here. I should have raised the bet, but I thought the WMU running backs could do more to help.
Northern Illinois(-5.5) at Akron: MISS! The NIU offense is looking better lately. So is the defense for that matter.
Temple at Central Florida(-9.5) MISS! I can’t really call the UCF points garbage points, but they sure felt like it.
Pittsburgh at Virginia(-9.5): MISS! I’m just as dumbfounded by this as you are.
Western Kentucky at Middle Tennessee State(-13.5) HIT! So, now you all know that I am not high, and you can somewhat trust these picks.
Colorado at Arizona(-3.5): MISS! Khalil Tate is back. The Pac 12 has been warned.
Louisville at Clemson(-39.5): HIT! I suppose the message is pretty clear now. Clemson isn’t letting up anytime soon.
Nebraska at Ohio State(-18.5): HIT! The Nebraska offense is about right where they need to be. The defense is another story, but you could say the same for Ohio State.
Syracuse(-5.5) at Wake Forest: HIT! Wake played a good game, and still lost by double digits. The Orange may be the second best team in the ACC right now.
Texas A&M at Auburn(-3.5): HIT! This was a good game if you can look past the fact that Auburn was thought to be a top ten team at the worst.
Iowa State(-15.5) at Kansas: MISS! That Iowa State defense is a really good unit, and the offense doesn’t turn it over.
South Carolina at Mississippi: MISS! This was a very entertaining game. I’m glad I only put one point on it so I could properly enjoy it.
Rutgers at Wisconsin(-28.5): HIT! Rutgers freshman Artur Sitkowski outdid Hornibrook, if that tells you anything. Of course, this was a game where Wisconsin didn’t need to throw. Taylor dominated this game on the ground.
Michigan State(-2.5) at Maryland: HIT! I honestly thought this would be closer, but I’m not complaining. A win is a win.
Oklahoma State(-6.5) at Baylor: MISS! That was a pretty big letdown for Oklahoma State after a big home win.
Air Force at Army(-6.5): MISS! An Army win, but much closer than I thought.
Memphis(-11.5) at East Carolina: HIT! There were 100 combined points in this one, and Henderson only had 132 rushing yards. Yeah, I’m shocked too.
Central Michigan at Eastern Michigan(-13.5): MISS! I should have known better in a rivalry, but in all fairness, I was an advocate of letting this go anyway.
Georgia Tech(-5.5) at North Carolina: HIT! Georgia Tech is going to be an interesting draw for someone in a bowl game. I wouldn’t want to play them right now.
Texas State at Georgia State(-6.5): MISS! Wow…..a nine point road win by the Bobcats. I was quite sure they didn’t have it in them.
San Jose State at Wyoming: MISS! I suppose I should have known better.
South Alabama at Arkansas State(-14.5): HIT! I let that half take me farther off of this game than it should have.
Georgia Southern at Louisiana-Monroe(-6.5): MISS! I knew better. Either that or I just can’t pick the Sun Belt.
Marshall(-2.5) at Southern Mississippi: MISS! This was a really good game. I have that to hang on to, I guess.
Georgia(-9.5) at Kentucky: MISS! Kentucky finally ran into someone that could dominate them and that could make short work of their defense.
West Virginia at Texas(-1.5): HIT! This was one of the better games of the season, and maybe the best among power five teams. Wow!
Iowa at Purdue(-2.5): HIT! I never expected to need that half, but I’m sure glad it was there!
Florida State at North Carolina State(-8.5): HIT! Florida State has made me a lot of money this season by playing like bums.
Liberty at Massachusetts(-1.5): MISS! WHAT. A. GAME. I hope you didn’t miss this one. Just because they aren’t big name teams doesn’t mean that there aren’t some really good games down here.
UTEP at Rice(EVEN): HIT! Ha! Take that Rice! I’m done with you!
Tulane at South Florida(-6.5): MISS! This was an absolute beatdown by the Green Wave. Well done guys!
Navy at Cincinnati(-13.5): MISS! This was a statement for Cincinnati here. Even if Navy is down, this was still a pretty big win.
Louisiana at Troy(-9.5): HIT! Okay, so maybe Troy only barely covered instead of by three touchdowns. A win is still a win.
Kansas State at TCU(-9.5): HIT! It wasn’t an outright win, but this was a pretty sure thing that TCU wasn’t going to run off with this.
Minnesota(-9.5) at Illinois: MISS! When was the last time Illinois scored 55 points? No, seriously, I am asking the readers this time because I am on a cruise ship with ridiculously slow internet and don’t want to spend the next two hours researching it.
Penn State at Michigan(-11.5): MISS! Another BIG statement by the Wolverines. Only one major hurdle left…..
Boston College(-2.5) at Virginia Tech: MISS! This Hokie defense needs help, and not the kind of help that can happen yet this year.
Missouri at Florida(-6.5): MISS! This still isn’t enough to get me to believe in Missouri, but this could be the game that puts Drew Lock on the stage for good.
Utah(-7.5) at Arizona State: MISS! Another vaunted defense came up way short. The only difference is that Florida got exposed at home. At least the Utes were on the road like Kerouac.
Charlotte at Tennessee(-22.5): HIT! Who is more of a disaster, Tennessee or Florida? We’ll find out this week!
Appalachian State(-14.5) at Coastal Carolina: HIT! There is more defense in the Sun Belt than the SEC right now…..
Connecticut at Tulsa(-18.5): HIT! UConn is becoming as much of a free space as the Seminoles. That’s only a problem if they play each other, which they don’t.
Houston(-14.5) at SMU: MISS! This was easily the best game SMU has played all year. Of course, I’ve been picking the Ponies like they could play like this for much of the year. Except for this one.
Duke at Miami(FL)(-9.5): HIT! Miami is a long way down if they lose by eight at home to Duke. Hey, weren’t the Hurricanes good not long ago?

Notre Dame(-10.5) at Northwestern: HIT! This was somewhat tough for the Domers, but Northwestern was never really a threat to win it outright.
Louisiana Tech at Mississippi State(-28.5): MISS! Wow….what a beating. This was ugly!
UCLA at Oregon(-10.5): HIT! UCLA’s growth is stunted until the defense starts showing the same promise that the offense has.
Florida Atlantic at Florida International(-2.5): HIT! Well, that’s the way to really stick it to your rival. Nothing like a 35 point road win when a three point dog.
UTSA at UAB: HIT! Another week, another Blazer beating. I hope UAB draws a power five team in a bowl. They could really give them a run for their money.
Oklahoma(-13.5) at Texas Tech: HIT! This game was every bit as close and as high scoring as I expected. I honestly don’t know if Oklahoma could have won had Alan Bowman been able to finish the game.
Alabama(-14.5) at LSU: MISS! This should leave absolutely no question about who the best team in the country is. As if there were much of one before….
Stanford at Washington(-10.5): HIT! I hope you all cashed in on this one as well. There is no way the Huskies were going to win by that much.
USC(-16.5) at Oregon State: MISS! Well, I was bound to lose by a half somewhere along the line.
BYU at Boise State(-13.5): HIT! The BYU defense was up to the task.
San Diego State(-10.5) at New Mexico: MISS! There is absolutely no reason the Aztecs shouldn’t have covered this. That makes them really hard to bet on either way.
Fresno State(-26.5) at UNLV: HIT! There is no derailing the Fresno train.
California at Washington State(-9.5): MISS! The Cougars are proving that they can win any kind of game. Is that enough to land them in the playoffs? With Washington playing poorly, don’t count on it. That win wont mean as much if they get it.
Utah State(-19.5) at Hawaii: HIT! When do the Aggies play Fresno? That’s going to be must see TV!
It turns out my premonition wasn’t warranted after all. I actually finished above .500 at 32-29 on the week. That puts me even at 267-267 on the season. So after 10 weeks, I’m back at zero! Usually by this time of the year, I want to be at least 20 games above. That’s going to be difficult with the regular season winding down.
Since I finished above .500, I should have gained some points here. Let’s see if I did.
This week’s totals follow the number. The season totals are in parentheses.
1. 3-5 (45-38) = 7
2. 10-9 (103-104) = -2
3. 11-9 (73-73) = 3
4. 5-3 (30-33) = -12
5. 3-3 (16-20) = -20
My five point picks are still severely lacking. I did gain 14 points this week, which helped partially make up for last week’s disaster. I am still down 24 points on this season, but maybe a week out of the loop will help my picks. I may be detached from reality with really horrid internet, but my picks will still make it to you from somewhere in the mid Atlantic. Stay tuned!
