NBA Rookie Rankings: Luka Doncic extends his lead
1. Luka Doncic
The Mavericks have handed the keys to their offense over to rookies two seasons in a row. Last season, Dennis Smith struggled as a rookie point guard. Doncic’s first season in the NBA is off to a much better start.
The scary thing about Doncic is that he may not even be in good playing shape at the moment. When you look at him out on the floor, he doesn’t look like he’s been through an NBA weight program. That, of course, is because he hasn’t enjoyed a full offseason with the Mavericks staff as of yet.
Despite his body issues, Doncic has been absolutely electric. He’s sporting a usage of 25.1 percent through 10 games and he’s been surprisingly efficient. No one can complain about his true shooting percentage of 58.9 or his 3-point attempt rate of .450. Doncic already understands where the most valuable shots in the NBA are and he’s adjusting his game accordingly.
Unfortunately for the Mavericks, his fine play hasn’t produced too many wins this season. Carlisle has to be disappointed with his team’s 3-7 start. Dallas has to take the long view though. They drafted the guy with the highest ceiling in this draft. Doncic is a guy they should build around for years to come.
