With the midterm elections behind us, but the Trump administration as crazy as ever, how would SNL approach this week’s news?
In any other era, the fact that the midterm elections were this past week would have been the biggest story. The Democrats didn’t churn out a blue wave like they expected, but the House flipped and now there’s a split in Washington when it comes to legislation.
But if you had to take a guess as to what SNL would use as fodder for its cold open this weekend, chances are it would be something away from the election booths. Perhaps something like what happened a few days after the election. Donald Trump was back on his B.S. (not that he ever was really off it) attacking CNN and reporter Jim Acosta.
SNL instead went a different route, choosing to build its cold open around the resignation of Jeff Sessions.

All of the stops were pulled out to bid Kate McKinnon’s Jeff Sessions farewell — even if it’s not the last we’ve seen of him. Both of the Trump sons dropped by, Beck Bennett stepped in as Mike Pence, and Robert De Niro returned as Robert Mueller.
