Texas heads west to face Texas Tech in a primetime Big 12 showdown. Here is what you need to know before Saturday.
Two in-state rivals meet up this weekend when the No. 17 Texas Longhorns head to Lubbock to face the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Both teams are coming off close losses. With the season winding down, conference games mean a lot more for teams looking to become bowl eligible or challenge for that conference championship.
Texas is coming off two crushing losses. In Stillwater, the Longhorns fell behind early against Oklahoma State and could not complete the comeback. It was their first loss since Maryland in week one.
Last week, Will Grier and the Mountaineers got the best of Texas in Austin. The Heisman candidate led a last-minute drive that ended with successful two-point conversion to give the Mountaineers a 42-41 victory. The loss dropped the Longhorns to 6-3 and third in the Big 12 standings. If Texas wants a shot at the conference title, winning out would likely be their best case scenario starting in Lubbock.
Texas Tech is also coming off back-to-back losses. After a tough loss in Ames, the Red Raiders gave Oklahoma all they could handle under the lights in Lubbock last week. Texas Tech led 31-28 at halftime, but starting quarterback Alan Bowman was forced to leave the game because of re-aggravating his partially collapsed lung he suffered against West Virginia. Jett Duffey kept the Red Raiders within striking distance, but Kyler Murray and the Sooners were too much.
At 5-4 and 3-3 in Big 12 play, Texas Tech and Kliff Kingsbury are at a critical point in the season. Bowman’s status is unknown, but the consensus is he will not play in this game. Expect Duffey to start this game as the team honors their seniors in the last home game of the season.
This game will be nationally televised on FOX and can be streamed on FOX Sports Go and the FOX Sports Go app.
