NFL hot seat watch: Carousel looms after Week 10 fallout

6. Mike McCarthy, Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers have employed Mike McCarthy as their head coach since 2006, but it’s possible that his reign is coming to an end if the Cheeseheads miss the playoffs this year. At 4-4-1, the Packers might miss the playoffs for the second year in a row. McCarthy’s missed the playoffs just three times in his tenure but there’s been stagnation that has limited this team’s upside.
While the league has transitioned to more spread concepts that force defenders to make quick decisions, McCarthy’s offense is still reliant on isolation routes that depend on individuals winning their matchups. The scheme is aged and tired, and a change is needed with this team to help maximize quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ remaining years.
The Packers would certainly be an appealing job. Rodgers’ presence helps, but this is a respected, loyal franchise that will afford any coach proper time and authority. General manager Brian Gutekunst is also well-regarded, and the new coach could possibly retain defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.
It’s likely they’d be big fish hunting. John Harbaugh, Lincoln Riley, Josh McDaniels and any other hot candidate would surely have their eyes on this situation if it comes open.
It may be a moot point though if the Packers sneak into the last Wild Card spot.
