Can Magna’s group be trusted on The Walking Dead?
In the cutthroat world of The Walking Dead, it’s difficult to trust newcomers. Should the people of Alexandria and their allies trust Magna’s group?
The Walking Dead introduced an older Judith Grimes as she helped save a small band of survivors. The latest episode “Who Are You Now?” revealed more about this new group and their struggle to be trusted by a wary Michonne and the people of Alexandria.
Right now the group doesn’t seem too malicious, and the distrust towards them seems to have more to do with a mysterious incident in which the communities were viciously attacked for accepting newcomers.
As the council of Alexandria tries to decide whether or not they should accept these characters into their community, Michonne realizes Magna has a prison tattoo. Rosita wisely points out that there are countless reasons Magna could’ve been in prison and it doesn’t say anything about the person Magna has become in these years since the zombie apocalypse began.
Magna does seem a bit hot-tempered and impulsive, willing to fight and even attack Michonne if it helps her group stay in the safety of Alexandria rather than being thrown back out into the zombie-infested wilderness. Fortunately Magna saw Michonne with her son RJ–the child she conceived with Rick–and Magna doesn’t go through with her terrible plan. More than anything it seems like Magna is just desperate to protect the people she’s survived with for so long, and not that she’s guided by any evil intent.
The others in Magna’s group seem more trustworthy and stable, though. Luke — played by Dan Fogler who’s known by many for portraying Jacob Kowalski in the Fantastic Beasts films — seems like an amicable, reasonable fellow. A deaf journalist who once exposed corrupt politicians, Connie is a unique character who is close with her sister Kelly, also a member of the group. The individual fans saw the least of was Yumiko, who due to a head injury spent most of the episode in the care of Siddiq. Michonne nearly casts them out, but eventually compromises by sending them to live at Hilltop.
As of now, it seems like Magna’s group will become allies rather than enemies for Alexandria, Hilltop, and the Kingdom. They were the entry point for the older Judith Grimes into the show. It would likely weaken Judith’s character if it turns out the group she helped save and advocated so strongly for turn out to be evil.
The Whisperers are clearly on their way to becoming the major antagonists of season 9. Next to the Whisperers, Magna’s group aren’t going to seem like a legitimate threat. It would make more sense to prove themselves to the communities by playing active roles in the fight against the Whisperers.
