Saturday marks the 88th edition of the Victory Bell rivalry game between USC and UCLA. It’s been a forgettable season for both Trojans and Bruins fans, but any time two rivals get together, there’s a chance to salvage the season and find some momentum for next season.

USC is coming off a horrendous loss against Cal where the offense didn’t look like it showed up after having a great performance on the road against Oregon State the week prior. Clay Helton calling plays hasn’t gone well and his job is on the line. Despite the poor play from the offense, it was the defense that held the Cal offense to 210 yards and gave their team a chance to pull out the win that never materialized.

UCLA is coming off of a three-point road loss to Arizona State that saw quarterback Wilton Speight throw for 335 yards along with two touchdowns in his best game with UCLA. Caleb Wilson came up big as he had 11 catches for 164 yards and two scores. That connection will look to carry over their success into this game where he’ll likely be defended by All-Pac-12 cornerback Iman Marshall.

If USC wants to win this game it comes down to the offensive line play as UCLA has a weak run defense. If the Trojan offensive line can open holes for Aca’Cedric Ware he can have a big day and it can open the passing game for JT Daniels.

If UCLA wants to win this game they are going to have to have to get their athletes in space to make plays through the air. Wilson is going to have to bring that momentum from last week and apply it at the Rose Bowl. They have to get Josh Kelley going fast so they can build a tempo off of the run game and keep the Trojans defense guessing. The Bruin defense is going to have to step up big this week if they want the Victory Bell back in Westwood.

Prediction: UCLA had an encouraging game last week, albeit in a losing effort while USC is reeling after having their 14-game win streak vs. Cal snapped. If the Trojans come out slow, the Bruins could strike early and sap the energy from USC. I think this will be a one-possession game with USC too talented to let this one slip away. If USC loses, however, it could be curtains for Helton’s tenure at USC.
