The No. 8 Washington State Cougars have returned home and are trying to get their 10th win of the season as Kevin Sumlin’s Arizona Wildcats come to town looking for an upset and bowl eligibility.

Mike Leach’s team has exceeded all reasonable expectations up to this point and now the No. 8 Washington State Cougars are hoping to close the season out on a high note. The Arizona Wildcats have arrived in Pullman, Washington looking to ruin what’s been a beautiful season for Wazzu, but can they really slow down Gardner Minshew and this offense?

Minshew has been everything that Leach needed to succeed this year. The graduate transfer quarterback has stepped into this season and found an offense in which he could absolutely thrive. The Cougars are airing the ball out with ease and are racking up 392 passing yards per game. Minshew has been able to spread things out as five different Washington State receivers have at least 400 receiving yards this season.

So, what can Arizona realistically do that would make things difficult for Washington State? Well, Kevin Sumlin’s team has found a way to run the ball without endangering quarterback Khalil Tate and also turning Tate into a true passing threat.

This year, Tate has already thrown for 1954 yards, 19 touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions despite being dinged up and missing some significant playing time. Just last week against Colorado, Tate had a breakthrough game and threw for 350 yards and 5 touchdowns against one pick. Oh, and since Arizona’s quarterback isn’t running, that’s led to more opportunities for running back JJ Taylor, who already has 1221 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns.

Prediction: If you want to watch this game, you’ll have to stay up late to do it. This is the prime Pac-12 After Dark sort of game because things could get wild and there’s probably not going to be enough people keeping an eye on it. Washington State is incredibly good this year, but Arizona has some elements that could keep this game close for a while. The Wildcats have played well on defense in recent weeks and are fresh off of a bye week. The safe bet is to pick the Cougars, but expect a few big plays from Arizona to keep everyone on their toes.

Score: Washington State 41, Arizona 28
