Jaguars reportedly willing to trade Jalen Ramsey
Jalen Ramsey and the Jaguars have had a disappointing season, so could the All-Pro cornerback be on the move during the offseason?
After appearing in the AFC Championship Game last year, the Jacksonville Jaguars are 3-6 with a five-game losing streak heading into Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cornerback Jalen Ramsey is part of a defense that has dropped off, and according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter the Jaguars are likely to consider trading Ramsey during the offseason.
Ramsey is due to make $3.63 million next season, with a fifth-year option for 2020 as he completes his rookie contract. That is fantastic value for a player of his caliber, and he turned 24 a few weeks ago (Oct. 24).
However, the team has denied the rumors on Twitter. Take that for what you will.
Ramsey made headlines during the preseason with his assessment of quarterbacks around the league in an interview with GQ. Somehow absent from harsh critique was his own team’s quarterback, Blake Bortles, and Ramsey has generally not been afraid to speak his mind.
That tweet grabbed attention, as Ramsey suggested he’d be gone sooner rather than later. But he dismissed it as a message to “fake fans” who haven’t stuck by the Jaguars.
If the Jaguars really do shop Ramsey in the offseason, the market would be robust and the return in a deal should be excellent.
As a head coach, Tom Coughlin was a noted old-school disciplinarian who didn’t appreciate distractions caused by players. In his current role atop the Jaguars’ organization, as executive vice president, it’s certain that sentiment remains with whatever influence he has over personnel moves.
If nothing else, Ramsey has opened his mouth (or his Twitter account) and drawn attention on a consistent basis in recent months. Coughlin surely hasn’t liked that, particularly as the team has lost games and the defense has under-performed. Parting with a talent such as him is never easy, but Ramsey could find himself in another uniform by Week 1 of the 2019 season.
