Where does Chiefs-Rams rank among the highest scoring NFL games ever?
By Nick Tylwalk
The incredible Monday Night Football showdown between two 9-1 teams managed to light up the scoreboard, but did it do that better than any previous NFL game?
Every now and then, sports fans get a gift like the Monday Night Football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams. Not only did it live up to all the anticipation with lead changes and score changes galore, it set records as the highest scoring Monday Night Football game ever and the first NFL game where both teams eclipsed 50 points.
And yes, defense fans, there were some big plays made by people on the other side of the ball, on both teams.
However, even with an incredible 105 points, that didn’t quite get the game the title of highest scoring NFL game ever. That mark was set back in 1966, when the Washington Redskins manged to outscore the New York Giants 72-41.
It wasn’t even the biggest point total of the 21st century. In 2004, the Cincinnati Bengals downed the Cleveland Browns 58-48 in a contest that wasn’t sealed until a late pick-six.
Here’s a quick look at the top 10 after Monday night:
Highest scoring NFL games ever
1. Washington Redskins 72-New York Giants 41, 113 points, 1966
2. Cincinnati Bengals 58-Cleveland Browns 48, 106 points, 2004
3. Los Angeles Rams 54-Kansas City Chiefs 51, 105 points, 2018
4T. Oakland Raiders 52-Houston Oilers 49, 101 points, 1969
4T. New Orleans Saints 52-New York Giants 49, 101 points, 2015
6T. Seattle Seahawks 51-Kansas City Chiefs 48, 99 points, 1983
6T. Denver Broncos 51-Dallas Cowboys 48, 99 points, 2013
8T. San Diego Chargers 54-Pittsburgh Steelers 44, 98 points, 1985
9T. Cleveland Browns 51-Cincinnati Bengals 45, 96 points, 2007
9T. New York Jets 51-Miami Dolphins 45, 96 points, 1986
So the Chiefs-Rams clash will have to “settle” for third place, though because of how the game played out, it has many fans calling it the greatest NFL game they’ve ever seen. That counts for something. It’s definitely not an event that anyone who watched it is likely to forget any time soon.
