The Serie A season resumes following the international break on Saturday. First place Juventus host SPAL at the Allianz Stadium. SPAL are 15th, looking to avoid relegation for a second straight season.
No team in Serie A history have got off to a better start than Juventus, who have picked up 34 of a possible 36 points. Juventus defeated AC Milan 2-0 in their last game with Cristiano Ronaldo and Mario Mandzukic scoring. The duo has formed a strong partnership in their first season together. Ronaldo has scored eight goals this season, the second most in Serie A. Mandzukic has scored five goals despite playing only nine games. Juventus will rely on their strong attack and league-best defense to continue their undefeated season.
Only three years ago, SPAL were playing in Serie C. The club won the Serie C title in 2016 and won Serie B the following season, gaining promotion to Serie A. In their first season, SPAL avoided relegation, finishing 17th. SPAL got off to a strong start this season, winning three of their first four games. However, the club has struggled over their last eight games, picking up only four points. SPAL blew a 2-0 lead in their last game against Cagliari, settling for a 2-2 draw. Andrea Petagna and Mirco Antenucci both scored against Cagliari and have been two of SPAL’s best players this season. Petagna and Antenucci have combined for seven of the club’s 11 goals this season. The duo will lead the attack against Juventus on Saturday.
