Texas Tech head coach Kliff Kingsbury is potentially out after a disappointing season in the Big 12 following Saturday’s loss to Baylor.
This was not a fun year to be a Texas Tech Red Raiders fan, and the program may have already decided the fate of head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
According to KENS 5 sports director Joe Reinagel, the Red Raiders have reportedly decided to part ways with the 39-year-old head coach. This report came just hours after the Red Raiders lost another brutal one to Baylor, losing 35-24 and falling to 5-7 on the year.
Kingsbury’s tenure in Texas Tech was rocky, going 35-40 and never winning more than eight games in a season. The Red Raiders high-powered offense was still a sight to behold, however, producing players like Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Given his ability to run an offense, and with the way the NFL has adopted spread offense and college concepts, Kingsbury will likely be an interesting candidate next offseason for teams looking for a potential offensive coordinator.
Admit it. You know Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones will want to call Kingsbury up. You’re not the only one that wants to see it, either.
An intriguing combination would be Kingsbury joining Andy Reid’s staff in Kansas City and being reunited with Mahomes. Could two offensive minds co-exist and help Mahomes make the Chiefs a consistent Super Bowl contender, or could egos collide and create friction?
There’s also the possibility that Kingsbury will consider staying in the college scene for the opportunity to run the show. Teams looking to air it out (at the possible expense of giving up plenty of points on defense) could send Kingsbury some lucrative offers.
Regardless, Kingsbury is likely heading into the open market, and there’s going to be no shortage of opportunities for the young coach.
