After a stuttering start under their talented new coach Lucien Favre, Dortmund have stepped up a level in recent months. All but assured of progress in the Champions League with two group games still left to play, they also sit top of the Bundesliga table by four points, after defeating Bayern a fortnight ago in one of the best games of the season.
Jadon Sancho’s meteoric rise continued during the international break, when he earned his first England start and was handed the Bundesliga’s player of the month award for October. Sancho’s success has led to increased speculation in recent weeks about Christian Pulisic’s future, with reports linking the USMNT star with a move to the Premier League. But Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc has since stated that Pulisic will stay at the club until at least the end of the season, ruling out a January sale.
Widely tipped as relegation candidates at the start of the season, Mainz currently sit comfortably in ninth following consecutive Bundesliga victories over Freiburg and Bremen. Only two teams – Schalke and Stuttgart – have scored fewer league goals, however, so this is again unlikely to be an easy season for Sandro Schwarz’s side.
