The Premier League season resumes following the international break with Manchester United hosting Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. United are a disappointing eighth in the table with 20 points. The Red Devils are seven points out of a top-four spot. Palace are just barely above the relegation zone with eight points.
United lost 3-1 to Manchester City in their final game before the international break. The loss ended a four-game streak that saw the Red Devils pick up 10 points. United’s biggest problem this season has been their inability to defend. The leaky defense has allowed 21 goals, the fifth most in the Premier League. Jose Mourinho’s team has actually been outscored this season. United have scored only 20 goals this season. Romelu Lukaku has been ice-cold lately, failing to score in United’s last seven games. While Lukaku has struggled, Anthony Martial has had a breakout season. Martial has scored six goals in the last five games.
Palace lost 1-0 to Tottenham prior to the international break. The Eagles have been awful over their last seven games, picking up only two points. The poor run has the club just above the relegation zone. Palace, Southampton, and Cardiff are all tied for the final relegation spot with eight points. If Palace are again going to survive an awful start to the season and avoid relegation, it will likely be because of Wilfried Zaha. The Ivory Coast international might be the best player in the Premier League who does not play for one of the big six clubs. The former United winger has three goals and two assists this season.
