The Michigan Wolverines look to shed history and top the rival Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus for the first time since 2000 on Saturday.
Rivalry Week always holds a bevy of matchups that college football fans have been looking forward to all season. However, the one game that’s always included in that mix and always seems to steal a great deal of the spotlight is the matchup between the Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes, a rivalry that will add a new chapter in Columbus on Saturday afternoon.
The rivalry has been one-sided in recent years in favor of Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes. Not only has Jim Harbaugh not been able to top Ohio State since he arrived as the head coach in Ann Arbor, but the Wolverines program as a whole is on a six-game losing streak against their bitter foes. What’s more, they’ve not hardly seen any success in Columbus this century, last winning on the road in 2000.
This year’s Michigan team, however, is different. Shea Patterson, after some early-season growing pains, has proven to be the answer at quarterback for Harbaugh. With a litany of talented weapons like Donovan Peoples-Jones, Nico Collins and running back Karan Higdon, this is the best Wolverines offense we’ve seen under Harbaugh. And with the defense stout once again, that makes them dangerous.
Of course, the Wolverines defense is in-limbo a bit coming into this game as they’re trying to figure out if star edge rusher Chase Winovich will play as he’s banged up. His presence will be key in this one as the defense looks to shut down JK Dobbins, Dwayne Haskins and an explosive OSU offense.
There’s no doubt that the Ohio State offense can score, but it’s been their defense that’s been a major concern of late. In a loss to Purdue and two close wins over Nebraska and Maryland, the Buckeyes have been on the ropes against mediocre offenses. Now facing an offense the caliber of the Wolverines’, they could find themselves in trouble if that level of play continues.

At least when you consider the recent history of the rivalry, seeing the Wolverines as five-point favorites heading into Columbus is a bit of a shock. However, that’s the way it likely should be given what we’ve seen from both teams in recent weeks and in 2018 as a whole.

Prediction
Though we may seem early hiccups in this game from Harbaugh’s team, I think we see them for all 60 minutes from Meyer’s group. There is no reason to have faith in the Ohio State defense with they way that they’ve performed over the past month. And when you then put the Buckeyes offense against a stout UM defense, there doesn’t seem to be a chance for them to save themselves this time around.
Final Score: Michigan Wolverines 38, Ohio State Buckeyes 27
