The Euro Roundup: Real thrashed again, Henry’s first Monaco victory
By Matt Addison
All you need to know from the weekend of European football action, as a new team took the lead in Spain, while Juve and PSG strengthened their title grip.
Real Madrid were once again the biggest story of the weekend as Santi Solari’s first match in charge having been confirmed as their new permanent manager ended in an uncomfortable defeat.
There was better news, though, for Thierry Henry, as Monaco finally won a game to move off the bottom of the Ligue 1 table, while Borussia Dortmund find themselves in an even better position as they attempt to win the Bundesliga for the first time in six seasons.
Real slip up again
Sevilla are top of La Liga after they beat Real Valladolid 1-0 thanks to a goal from Andre Silva, with results elsewhere at the top end of the table going their way.
Atletico Madrid were moments away from earning a rare win over Barcelona before Ousmane Dembele scored in the last minute of normal time to cancel out Diego Costa’s opener which had come around a quarter of an hour prior to that.
Real Madrid could have capitalized on the draw between their two main rivals, but instead lost 3-0 to Eibar.
Prior to Saturday, Eibar had only ever scored three times in their history against Real Madrid, but Gonzalo Escalante, Sergi Enrich and Kike made it a convincing victory for the Basque side, who are now only two points behind Los Blancos in the league standings.
Madrid are missing Casemiro in the center of the pitch, with Dani Ceballos simply overrun and Toni Kroos refusing to play the holding role, but all over the pitch there are issues: Gareth Bale, for example, hasn’t scored for two months, and Sergio Ramos admitted the players didn’t “show the right attitude.”
Alaves remain inside the top four despite losing 1-0 to Leganes, while Valencia are 10th having beaten Rayo Vallecano 3-0.
Juve ease ahead
Juventus are eight points clear at the top of the Serie A table after they beat SPAL 2-0 at the Allianz Stadium, with goals coming through Cristiano Ronaldo and Mario Mandzukic.
Napoli could only draw 0-0 with Chievo at the Stadio San Paolo, and they’re now only a point ahead of Inter Milan, who beat Frosinone 3-0 thanks to two goals from Keita Balde and another from Lautaro Martinez.
There were no away victories at all in this round of Serie A action, with Udinese beating Roma 1-0, and 1-1 draws between Lazio and AC Milan, and Genoa and Sampdoria.
Empoli beat Atalanta 3-2 while Sassuolo lost 2-1 at Parma.
Henry wins at last
PSG warmed up for their midweek crunch clash with Liverpool in the Champions League by making it 42 points from a possible 42 in Ligue 1, beating Toulouse 1-0.
Both Neymar and Kylian Mbappe were injured on international duty and therefore not risked ahead of the Liverpool game, so it was Edinson Cavani’s goal that separated the sides. PSG are now 15 points clear at the top of the table and have only conceded an average of half a goal per league game.
Lyon also won 1-0, with Jason Denayer scoring the decisive goal against Saint-Etienne before Rafael was sent off.
The result of the round, though, saw Thierry Henry finally win his first game as Monaco boss as they narrowly overcame Caen by a solitary goal to nil.
Radamel Falcao was the hero on the day as Monaco recorded their first three points since the opening game of the season against Nantes. They are now ahead of Guincamp in the table, with Reims beating them 2-1.
Dortmund extend advantage
Bayer Leverkusen began the weekend of action on Friday night by beating bottom of the table Stuttgart 2-0, but the real story developed the following day as Borussia Dortmund won 2-1 away at Mainz while Bayern Munich could only draw 3-3 with Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Bayern had been 3-1 up on the hour mark but two goals from Dodi Lukebakio, the second in the third minute of added time, means Bayern now sit in fifth place and are nine points off top spot.
Dortmund’s goals came through Paco Alcacer and Lukasz Pisczek, and they remain four clear of Borussia Monchengladbach, who beat Hannover 4-1.
It was a weekend of goals for the Bundesliga, with Hertha Berlin drawing 3-3 with Hoffenheim — Valentino Lozano equalized for the home side with 87 minutes on the clock — and Schalke beating Nurnberg 5-2.
Wolfsburg beat RB Leipzig 1-0, while Eintracht Frankfurt won 3-1 at Augsburg.
