Los Angeles Chargers WR Mike Williams

Melvin Gordon’s absence from the Los Angeles Chargers due to a knee injury won’t just affect the running backs, but it could also affect wide receivers, specifically Mike Williams. The Chargers red-zone weapon of choice agains the Arizona Cardinals, Williams, who is among the best in the NFL at the catch point, hauled in two touchdowns to bring his season total up to seven.

Williams has caught a touchdown pass on nearly every third reception this season, so while he barely averages two receptions per game, he makes them count from a fantasy perspective. Owned in most leagues, Williams is still available in shallow leagues and could continue to be a high-upside play due to his knack for scoring touchdowns.

Gordon caught four touchdown passes this season and ran in nine more, and while Ekeler and Jackson could steal those red-zone opportunities out of the backfield, those four receiving touchdowns do stand out. Williams could be the main beneficiary, especially if Philip Rivers’s record-setting Week 12 performance and Gordon’s injury lead the Chargers coaching staff to dial up more passing plays.

Williams is starting to play his best football, and the former seventh overall pick could be a breakout fantasy option down the stretch of the regular season.
