FanDuel NBA GPP Breakdown

Hello again and welcome back to the Tuesday edition of the FanDuel NBA GPP Breakdown. I’m “Thunder Dan” and I love FanDuel NBA DFS more than I love baking Christmas cookies (but not much, I’m actually an excellent baker and ’tis the season!)

Cooking up cookies isn’t all I’m doing, I’m back for another week of NBA action to help you cook up some winning DFS lineups. All kidding aside, my goal every day is to give you my top targets every night for GPP contests for FanDuel NBA.  When making these picks I always take into account salary, ownership, and match-up and I always do my best to give you a clear rationale for why I believe each player makes an elite GPP target.

Tonight we have five games on tap, which is pretty solid for a Tuesday.  I’ll be going position by position today instead of game-by-game since we have enough games to keep that format.  I always include my “Game Stack of Night” which is my favorite game to target with multiple players from both teams.

"For tournaments, we’re not satisfied with just 5x return on a player’s salary, we’re looking for players who can hit 6-7x value or greater."

Remember, this is a first look article that is intended to get you pointed in the right direction with your research. There will be information that comes out during the day that will likely push us onto certain plays or off others.  Always make sure you monitoring Twitter for player updates or getting those push notifications to your phone.

Without any further ado, let’s get into the picks!

FanDuel NBA GPP Breakdown: Five-Game Slate

I love that we have five games to pick from tonight, we’ve had a couple of three-game slates lately that simply aren’t as much fun. Five-gamers are really optimal number for tournaments because we can game-stack if we want and there should still be enough value available if we want to try to plug-in multiple studs in our lineups.

Here’s what we know about tonight’s slate.

*****The Miami Heat should be short-handed again tonight, particularly in their backcourt as Goran Dragic and Tyler Johnson are being listed as out for tonight’s game with the Hawks.

*****Victor Oladipo has already been ruled out for the Pacers, who will be on the road taking on the Phoenix Suns without their star player for the fourth game in a row.

*****Rajon Rondo is still out for the Lakers, though he sounds like he’s nearing a return sometime soon.

*****Gary Harris is still questionable for Denver, but his coach said he’s hopeful to play.

We are still waiting on a few Vegas totals, but this is an odd slate in that none of the games have very high totals or really stand out as most fantasy-friendly than the others. It’s going to be hard to just cross off certain games tonight, and I think focusing on individual matchups for each player is probably a worthwhile strategy.

The Heat and Pacers are two teams we can definitely focus on, as they’re missing key rotation players that really enhance the rest of their core guys.

LeBron James is the only player true superstar on the slate (sorry Kawhi, Drummond and Marc Gasol) and is 600 more than any other player.

Ok, let’s get to the breakdown!

FanDuel NBA GPP Breakdown: Point Guards

Jamal Murray (7300)

Murray is my favorite PG tonight for a few reasons. First, he and the rest of the Nuggets are in a pace-up spot against the run-and-gun Lakers. Secondly, he’s played 35+ minutes in each of his last four games and has been solid, scoring 34+ FD points in each. And finally, he could get another boost in usage if his backcourt mate Gary Harris misses tonight’s game. Murray doesn’t mind taking more shots, as he is an offensive-minded, shoot-first point guard to begin with. Toss in that he went for 22-10-1 in their first matchup and I’m sold.

Reggie Jackson (5800)

Speaking of more minutes, don’t look now but Reggie Jackson has played 33 and 31 in his last two games and averaged over 38 FD points. Jackson had only exceeded 30 minutes 5 times all season before this latest trend and has been stuck in an annoying timeshare with Ish Smith. Is Coach Casey ready to give Jackson bigger minutes for good? I hope so because the matchup tonight is excellent as the Pistons face the “defense optional” Knicks at home.  Jackson is underpriced if he gets those 30+ minutes and we could be looking at an easy 6x if Coach Casey lets him play. I’m crossing my fingers and rolling him out there.

Value: Cory Joseph (4800)

FanDuel NBA GPP Breakdown: Shooting Guards

Shooting guard is very top-heavy today, so you might think it’s cheating to write-up two highest priced guys other than the injured Oladipo. However, I think it’s actually a good idea to pay up at shooting guard since there is such a lack of options. Positional scarcity is something we have to consider when building lineups and while many will just punt shooting guard because they like paying up elsewhere, I’d rather lock in the top two highest raw points and look for value elsewhere.

Devin Booker (8500)

Booker is on fire right now, and no Oladipo defense to worry about makes him a lock for me. He’s running the point and taking a healthy number of shots. He’s averaging 31-3-6 over his last four games and I expect him to put up another healthy stat line tonight. Let’s move right along, nothing more to see here…

Tim Hardaway Jr. (7000)

Somewhere in New Jersey, @2locksports is smiling because I never write-up his boy THJ, and today I am doing it. EDITORS NOTE – I can confirm, 2LockSports is smiling and endorses this selection.

The last time I was on him, so was everyone else and he let us down. In fact, he’s coming off two poor games in a row. But tonight is a great spot for him, as Detroit has had a really hard time defending wing players and we know that Timmy is going to play a ton of minutes and put up a bunch of shots. I think he gets us 5x on this price tonight and there’s a lot of potential for 6x or more.

Value: Aaron Holiday (4600)

FanDuel NBA GPP Breakdown: Small Forwards

Lebron James (11200)

He’s the greatest player in the world. And he’s in a good spot here tonight on the road against the Nuggets. LeBron seems to raise his game when he faces better competition and the Nuggets are likely to challenge him and the rest of his young Laker sidekicks tonight.

James put up a solid 64.7 FD points in this spot earlier this season with a 28-11-11 effort and I think he’s absolutely in play for tournaments tonight as he’s really the only player on the slate with a 70-80 point ceiling. There might be some game-log watchers who won’t want to spend up on the King but I certainly want some shares in tourneys tonight.

Bojan Bogdanovic (5500)

The crafty Croatian is becoming one of my favorite DFS players this season as his consistency has been remarkable.  After a rocky start to the season, he’s gone for 20+ FD points in 11 straight games and has really asserted himself as an important cog in the Indiana offense with 15 points a game for the Pacers. Now I know we are looking for ceilings and not floors here, so I’ll also throw out that B.B is shooting the ball at a 62% clip and scoring 20 points a game since Oladipo went out. The matchup here is great as Indiana gets a weak Phoenix perimeter defense that gives up a lot of three-pointers.

Juancho Hernangomez (5500)

I had to throw in one more guy at SF tonight since another one of my favorite young bombers is in a great spot. Juan is still getting 30+ minutes a night for Denver as their starting 3-man and has the green light to shoot the three ball. We saw him explore for 35 and 39 FD points a few weeks ago only to cool off for a three-game stretch last week. But he bounced back with 15-8 against OKC on Saturday and I like him a lot tonight in this pace-up spot against the Lakers.

Value: Mikal Bridges (4200)

FanDuel NBA GPP Breakdown: Power Forwards

Domantas Sabonis (7000)

My man crush, and our cover-boy today, Sabonis, is in a great spot against the Suns tonight. He’s just a ridiculous fantasy player right now with Oladipo out the lineup. He put up an easy 13-10-6 last night in only 23 minutes. If the Suns can keep it close and we get anywhere close to 30 minutes of Sabonis we’re talking about 45-50 fantasy point upside. The fact that trendy plays like Noah Vonleh and John Collins are only 300 less than Sabonis is even more exciting. Don’t be silly, play Sabonis tonight and then count your money tomorrow!

Serge Ibaka (6000)

As I mentioned, some value power forwards got big price hikes, which takes me off them for tourneys. Ibaka, meanwhile, got his price lowered as Toronto has a tough matchup with Memphis tonight.  Ibaka’s minutes have taken a hit when he comes off the bench and that’s certainly concerning. But his usage goes up and something tells me the Raptors are going to want his size and versatility in the lineup to match the size of Memphis and Marc Gasol. I think we see Ibaka creep closer to 30 minutes tonight and if that happens then he’s got a great opportunity to smash this price and he should be super sneaky.

Value: Trey Lyles (3800)

Why is Lyles this cheap? All he does is get 20+ FD points every time out?

FanDuel NBA GPP Breakdown: Centers

Andre Drummond (10600)

Drummond is the only other 10K+ player besides Lebron who I’m considering tonight.  Drum could smash the Knicks tonight and has gone for an average of 19-15 in his last five meetings with New York in only 31 minutes a game. The minutes here are important because Drummond needs to play more than 32 to really pay off this price. I think New York can keep it close, and we will need them to do so, and for Andre to stay out of foul trouble so he can drop that 60-burger we want.

Enes Kanter (7600)

Kanter is my favorite center tonight and possibly my favorite GPP play on the entire slate. He’s moved back into the starting lineup and has certainly shown that he belongs there with two excellent performances against New Orleans and Memphis, the latter being a ridiculous 21-26 game against tough competition in Marc Gasol.  We’ve seen centers go off against Drummond this season as he’s not a very good defender and I think Kanter’s nifty footwork inside and solid mid-range game will keep Andre off balance.

You never know when Coach Fiz might pull the rug out from under us, but you’d have to think he’d want Kanter’s size out there on the floor against Drummond and Griffin. This is the perfect spot for Kanter and I’m willing to go well over the field here tonight at this fairly affordable price.

Value: Bam Adebayo (4600)

FanDuel NBA GPP Breakdown: Game Stack of the Night

New York (+7) @ Detroit (220 total)

Like I said earlier you can probably make a case for stacking any one of these games, but I like this one the best because I think it’s pretty easy to fit the pieces we want and stay under the cap without punting too many spots.

The Knicks could no-show and get beat up tonight, but I like their chances against a Detroit team that never really seems to pull away from anyone. The only player really overpriced here is Blake Griffin, so I’ll likely leave him out of my stacks and prioritize Reggie Jackson and Andre Drummond on the Detroit side.

For the Knicks, I’m sticking with their two most reliable players in Tim Hardaway Jr. and Enes Kanter. Sure, Emmanuel Mudiay could have a big game and either Trey Burke or Alonzo Trier could get hot off the bench, but figuring out which of those guards is going to get the minutes is maddening, and you’re likely to be wrong most of the time trying to guess who’s going to have the hot hand.

What stinks for this game stack is that you can’t play Drummond and Kanter in the same lineup on FanDuel. So I’ll likely make some builds with one and then the other. Kanter saves you a lot of cap, so I like him a bit more for his point-per-dollar upside but we know that Drum can always drop a 30-20 line on him on any given night.

FanDuel NBA GPP Breakdown: Sample Lineup and Slate Overview

Here’s what I am looking at this morning. I try to include as many of the players that I write-up in my lineups but at some point, you have to find value plays at certain positions to make everything fit. Even with only five games, there are quite a few different ways to go with roster construction today so I’ll likely mix and match my favorite plays and build a few small game stacks.

More from FanSided

Keep in mind these sample lineups are for illustrative purposes are not intended to be plug-and-play lineups. There’s still a lot that could happen that could change roster construction during the course of the day.  Spending up for LeBron eats up some cap room but I don’t mind punting a few spots with Holiday and Lyles in order to fit him in there.
