While the more expansive style of play we were expecting to see from Atletico Madrid this season hasn’t materialized yet, they’ve certainly been effective in recent months. They currently sit third in La Liga, just two points behind first-placed Sevilla, and unless Club Bruges pull off an unlikely win in Dortmund today, Atleti will qualify for the knock-out rounds regardless of the result here.
Diego Simeone’s side played out a tense if uneventful draw with Barcelona on Saturday that saw Diego Costa score his first league goal since February, although the striker is an injury doubt for this match.
Monaco were also in action on Saturday, when a Radamel Falcao set piece against Caen brought Thierry Henry his first win as a coach, albeit in his seventh game in charge at the club. Their performance was far from great, however, and they remain in Ligue 1’s relegation zone. To put Monaco’s awful form in stark perspective, it was their first victory in any competition since early August.
