9. Errol Spence Jr.

24-0, 21 KOs

Previous ranking: 8

Spence has all of the talent in the world, but is unfortunately not active enough. He has not fought since June, and only recently agreed to a fight with Mikey Garcia for March 2019. Someone with his talent, style and personality should be as active as possible. Only the superstars can afford to fight twice a year, and if you are not a household name, you should fight as often as possible.

Despite the relative inactivity, Spence is a special fighter. He just appears to have that “it” factor, that separates the really good fighters from the great. His relentless body work breaks opponents down, and he has the power to hurt anyone in the division.

He also has laid waste to some quality opponents, such as Kell Brook, Chris Algieri and Lamont Peterson.

While Keith Thurman has the better resume, most would agree that Spence would be the favorite if the two were to ever meet. In fact, Spence figures to be the favorite against anyone in the division, with the exception of maybe Terrence Crawford. He is that good.

Since his signature win over Kell Brook in May of 2017, Spence has fought only twice. The performance against Brook was the type that can propel you into stardom if you follow it up with activity.

It is a shame to see someone as talented as he is not be more active, as there are some great fights to be made at welterweight. At least Spence’s 2019 will be starting off with a fight against fellow pound for elite Mikey Garcia, who will be moving up in weight to challenge Spence.
