2. Turner Gill, Liberty Head Coach

In his previous head coaching jobs, Gill had some success at Buffalo (20-30 over four seasons, eight wins in 2008) and was a resounding failure at Kansas (5-19 over two seasons; 1-16 in the Big 12). But he has had solid success at Liberty since then (46-35 over seven seasons), and the Flames can finish .500 in their first season in the FBS with a win over Norfolk State on Saturday.

Liberty enters the weekend in the top-50 in FBS in scoring offense (31.5 points per game), and they’re just outside of that in total offense (55th in the country). They’re also 29th in the country in pass offense (270.3 yards per game), with quarterback Stephen Calvert topping 300 passing yards in five of 11 games heading into the regular season finale.

Gill is far enough removed from his epic failed stint at Kansas for it to be an irrelevant bad memory, and he seems sure to have good success at Liberty if he stays there. But if there’s an opportunity to get another crack at a bigger school, Gill surely wants it and Kansas State could go off the grid just a little bit to officially start a new era for the football program.
