Borussia Dortmund have been first for most of the Bundesliga season but have struggled to open up a large lead over the clubs trailing them. After 12 games, Dortmund are only four points ahead of Borussia Monchengladbach. On Saturday, Dortmund host Freiburg at Signal Iduna Park. Freiburg are in the middle of the Bundesliga table with 14 points.

Borussia Dortmund are unbeaten in the Bundesliga this season. In the Champions League, Dortmund dropped points, settling for a scoreless draw against Club Brugge on Wednesday. While the result was disappointing, it was enough for Dortmund to qualify for the knockout stage. Lucien Favre has had a successful start to his Dortmund tenure by remaking the midfield. A season ago, Dortmund struggled in midfield, struggling to win the ball and sloppily giving it away. The addition of Axel Witsel has remade the midfield and solved many of their problems. Favre also moved Marco Reus inside from the wing. Reus has scored eight goals and added six assists while opening up a spot for Jadon Sancho on the wing.

Freiburg’s goal every season is simple, avoid relegation. As one of the smaller clubs in the Bundesliga, Freiburg find a way to compete despite not having a strong financial backing. Even when Freiburg do get relegated, they never seem to stay down for long. This season, Freiburg are 11th with 12 points despite having won only two games. Luca Waldschmidt has had a good season for Freiburg, scoring three goals and setting up three others. Nils Petersen will make his return to the lineup for Freiburg after missing four games with an injury. Peterson has scored twice this season after scoring 15 the previous season.
