The Packers need to fire Mike McCarthy now

After another disappointing showing against the Arizona Cardinals, it’s time for the Green Bay Packers to finally say goodbye to head coach Mike McCarthy.

The Green Bay Packers have prided themselves on being a patient organization, whether it be with player development and acquisition, or front office personnel moves. If the Packers are serious about being a Super Bowl contender once again, it’s time to stop being so patient, specifically with head coach Mike McCarthy.

Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the lowly Arizona Cardinals perfectly summed up how this season has gone for the Packers. A team with sky-high expectations heading into the year can now kiss a chance at the playoffs goodbye with a 4-7-1 record. Not surprisingly, McCarthy is one of the first people fans will be blaming for this disappointment of a season.

McCarthy has been the head coach in Green Bay since 2006 and has been coasting off of a Super Bowl victory since 2010. It’s hard to blame the Packers for that, but what’s been more inexcusable is the fact that the Packers have gone 11-16-1 since the start of the 2017 season.

The Packers have given McCarthy a pass in previous seasons due to injuries to Aaron Rodgers, but this season we have seen the same issues that have been prevalent the past few years rear their ugly head.

Questionable decision making, offensive inconsistency, struggling to get the snap off in time and countless mental errors have made it hard to justify McCarthy keeping his job after the 2018 season.

There are plenty of other franchises that would fire McCarthy right now, and this is a more-than-valid situation to do exactly that. As Cheesehead TV co-founder Aaron Nagler pointed out, however, that’s just not how the Packers operate.

But why does that have to be the Packers way? It’s clear that with general manager Brian Gutekunst, the culture is starting to change in Green Bay. Replacing Ted Thompson, Gutekunst had the franchise start to actively spend in free agency this past offseason, something that the Packers had always been hesitant to do under Thompson.

The window to win another Super Bowl with Rodgers under center is closing fast. The quarterback just celebrated his 35th birthday on Sunday, and there are still a lot of problems with this team. Firing McCarthy now rather than later could help the Packers get a head start on their coaching search, giving them an edge over teams waiting until the end of the year to part ways.

There are bound to be plenty of attractive coaching candidates who would love the opportunity to work with Rodgers. Names like Josh McDaniels and John Harbaugh have already been floated around, but you can be sure that plenty of coaches in the NFL and college ranks would love an opportunity to take over in Green Bay.

If the Packers want their choice of just about anyone, and really do whatever it takes to be a contender again before Rodgers retires, it’s time to part ways with McCarthy.
