Ray Donovan recap: Mickey and Bunchy on robbery spree
By Nir Regev
Mickey and Bunchy went full Bonnie & Clyde on this week’s Ray Donovan, robbing a bus and cash-checking place/jewelry pawn outlet for father & son bonding time!
This recap contains spoilers for Ray Donovan season 6, episode 6.
Bunchy was anxious in his Priest uniform as ‘Father Brady’ when another man of the cloth approached him to talk, while he awaited his father’s Hampton Jitney bus mugging to take place. Mickey would take the bus, stating plainly this is a robbery and no one gets hurt if they just hand over their belongings peacefully, Bunchy would leave the getaway car and board the bus, covering Mickey when one lady refused to hand over her bag. It’s then a cameo jacket wearing man, pulled out his gun and told the two he doesn’t want to shoot but he will if he has to.
Mickey turned to Bunchy and told his son he’s going to shoot him but Bunchy refused, telling Mick if he shoots the man, he’s shooting him. Mickey responded “damn it” and would leave the bus but not before taking the lady’s purse for “not being nice” in a hilarious moment. It seemed Mickey’s plan had fallen by the wayside as the two left in the getaway car practically empty handed, just $35 dollars in the lady’s purse and some pantyhose.
However, Bunchy had other plans, he stopped the car by a cash-checking place/jewelry pawn outlet and told Mickey to put on the pantyhose, they’re robbing the store! The pair would storm the place like The Joker taking a bank for everything its got circa The Dark Knight. Mickey would pile the cash in a waste bin, while Bunchy told the officer on the ground to wait five minutes after they’re gone and not try to be a hero. They would escape, cash in hand, although there’s no telling what kind of camera trail they left on this impromptu, impulsive robbery!
Mickey would be delighted with his son however, yelling, “We did it, we did it! You and me son!” elated and overjoyed at the father/son bonding at the cash-checking place/jewelry pawn outlet. It seemed like everything was going according to plan, despite the quick ejection/exit out of the bus robbery and they would still leave the country over to Vietnam. All Bunchy would have to do is pick his daughter up from Terry…
Terry however, had other plans, taking up another underground bare-knuckle fight on this week’s Ray Donovan episode and calling Bridget to look after Maria. All Terry had to do was look after Bunchy’s daughter for 48 hours, 48 hours! And he couldn’t do it, getting Bridget involved so he could go fight. Terry did win the fight, and even broke the other fighter’s arm, before being offered a potential $50 grand if he wins a tournament sponsored by Big Easy. Replacing the fighter which he broke the arm of. Terry initially turned it down citing his medical issues openly to Big Easy but by the end of the episode called him up to ask if he still needed a fighter?
Above: Bridget would completely let Bunchy down, doing the unthinkable… Calling Teresa! Maria’s mother would show up to take Maria away from Bunchy once again blaming him for everything that’s happened. Bunchy cited her cheating on him breaking the belief that she loved him and this family, while he took care of Maria, and he would have never done the same to her.
Teresa would keep blaming Bunchy, telling him, he’s right, she “never loved him” until he finally had enough. Bunchy said she “can’t have it both ways,” that she’s mentally ill and he should have left her at that mental hospital. He would get slapped and Teresa would take Maria away. Afterwards Terry and Bunchy would have a talk on the bench where Terry told him it’ll be okay but Bunchy would reply him he doesn’t want to talk to him ever again.
This Ray Donovan episode would start off with a mysterious intruder pointing a gun at Sam Winslow’s face in the dead of night telling her to back out of the Mayor’s race. She would bite him and he pistol whipped Winslow after saying, “You shouldn’t have done that.” It was an interesting juxtaposition contrast with Ray sleeping with Anita Novak in a dual scene. The next morning Ray and Lena would visit Sam Winslow’s apartment, the first time Sam had ever met Lena. Sam would mention to Lena she shouldn’t feel sorry for her, that she “plays mean with mean people,” it’s just the first time something like that has happened to her.
Above: Ray would visit the Mayor at a gym/spa bathroom at the faucets and warned him to stay away from Sam Winslow. The Mayor, Ed, would reply “Excuse me?!” before being punched by Ray, and had some trouble breathing afterwards. Ray would go look for footage of the Winslow’s intruder using a previous contact, who told him it would take a few hours. So Ray decided to call Mac to get footage from the NYPD since it would be quicker.
Mac would lie to Ray that the cameras around that building are just for show and don’t work in order to protect Ray. However, Ray’s contact would pull the feed and the figure was recognizable… It was another officer! Ray would show up outside the department Mac works in and ask what’s going on, why he lied? Mac would tell him everybody’s watching Ray and to stay away from this, that it goes much deeper than he could ever dream of, and he recommends he drop Winslow and leave town. That he’s telling Ray this as a friend.
Ray would tell Sam the NYPD is working for the Mayor and that he doesn’t know if he can protect her. Sam mentioned she’s faced daunting odds before and she won’t back down. Ray told her he’s going to Staten Island to get more information. However, on the way to Mac’s he’s stopped by police on his drive there, one of which is the intruder seen on the feed. They beat Ray on the ground then take him into custody… Bridget had just called her father just before he’s stopped to tell him she’s “thought of mom” (Abby) recently, and doesn’t want to lose him too. Ray had told her she’ll “never lose him.”
