After Jeff Brohm decided to stay at Purdue, Louisville appears to be honing on Appalachian State’s Scott Satterfield as the replacement for Bobby Petrino.

Much to the chagrin of Cardinals fans and those who made early bets, Jeff Brohm is not coming back to coach at Louisville. But according to Pat Forde and Pete Thamel of Yahoo! Sports, Appalachian State coach Scott Satterfield remains the top target to replace Bobby Petrino.

Satterfield led the Mountaineers to a win in the first Sun Belt title game on Saturday, and they’ve now won or shared three straight conference titles. They’ve also won at least nine games in four straight seasons, with a 40-11 record over that span and double-digit wins three times over that stretch after Saturday’s 10th win of 2018.

Satterfield had come up as a candidate at Louisville, and he’s now become the favorite with Brohm deciding to stay at Purdue.

With a certain sense the Power 5 school wolves would come calling, Appalachian State gave Satterfield a contract extension through 2021 back in May 2017. But just a few days ago, he acknowledged he’d listen if another school had interest along with a specific mention of Louisville.

"I think I owe it to myself and my family to take a look,” “And I’ve always said I’ll listen. I’ll listen to see what people have to say.“And if there is interest on their part, we’ll see where it’s at. If it’s going to benefit our family and is a situation we feel like we can have success, then that’s something we’ll take serious. And if not, we’ll move on and continue to build a powerhouse here at Appalachian State."

Satterfield is an App State alum, with his entire coaching resume at the school outside of serving as quarterbacks coach at Toledo (2009) and offensive coordinator at FIU (2010-2011). He’s 51-24 over six seasons as head coach at Appalachian State, with a jump from the FCS after his first season.

Satterfield was a no-brainer candidate to replace Larry Fedora at North Carolina before Mack Brown was brought back in a quick turnaround. A relative dearth of good available jobs this year may lead to him staying home at Appalachian State, but Louisville seems ready to make Satterfield an offer he won’t be able to refuse after losing out on Brohm.
