Fortnite Friday is a weekly review of what is going on in the world of Fortnite. We cover the battle pass challenges, new game modes and any other information you need to know.

Fortnite Friday is a weekly column covering everything happening around the popular 100-person multiplayer showdown game, Fortnite: Battle Royale. Season 7 is here and the game has undergone some massive changes.

That giant iceberg came crashing into the map yesterday, bringing a winter wonderland with it. The new season looks like everything we dreamed it would be, including a ton of holiday content in the battle pass.

The most notable change that came with season 7 is the snowy new ice biome covering the southwest of the map. Greasy Grove and Flush Factory are gone, Happy Hamlet, Frosty Flights and Polar Peak are here.

Epic Games also made a huge announcement at the 2018 Game Awards last night, a very cool live in-game event that happened in real time in both the actual world and the Fortnite world. The Block will allow players to create part of the map.

You can find all of the season 7 changes summarized in this post. Let’s dive into the first week of season 7 challenges.

Free Challenges

  • Pick up an item of each rarity (0/5)
  • Dance in different forbidden locations (0/7)
  • Play matches with at least one elimination (0/5)

The first and third free challenges this week are very simple. Picking up items of each rarity and getting at least one elimination in five matches don’t involve too much thought. Dancing in forbidden locations is slightly more difficult as you’ll have to know where to look. Here is a map of all the forbidden locations, courtesy of Forbes.

Battle Pass Challenges

  • Stage 1: Dance on top of a crown of RVs (0/1)
    • Stage 2: Dance on top of a metal turtle (0/1)
    • Stage 3: Dance on top of a submarine location (0/1)
  • Deal Headshot Damage to opponents (0/500)
  • Stage 1: Search Ammo Boxes in a single match (0/5)
    • Stage 2: Search chests in a single match (0/3)
    • Stage 3: Search a supply drop (0/1)
    • Eliminate opponents in different Named Locations (0/5)
    • Some of these challenges are a little tricky. Let’s begin with the dance stages. The crown of RVs is located on the hill just south of “El Paso” (or New Mexico, Mexico, Copy/Paste, whatever you and your squad calls the loot-filled village in the Southeast section of the map). The metal turtle is a new addition on the Eastern coast of the map, between Lonely Lodge and Wailing Woods and the submarine is on a mountaintop just Southwest of Polar Peak. Here’s a map of the three locations (via Gaming Editorial).

Headshot damage and searching challenges aren’t overly difficult, especially given that it’s week 1 and you have an entire season to complete them. Eliminating opponents in named locations will be simple enough as well, given that the new locations you’ll be exploring all week will be packed with players looking around at all the new changes.

Update v7.00 patch notes and news

As mentioned above, this post covers all of the new changes from season 7, but we’ll run through a brief summary below. Here are the full patch notes from update v7.00.

Airplanes: The newest and most interesting part of Fortnite are the dogfights. No, not the horrible kind that got Michael Vick put in jail. Dogfighting is slang for airplane battles. The X-4 Stormwing planes seat 5 (interesting), include machine guns and are extremely fun to fly around in/parachute out of.

Ziplines: The new ziplines can be found in some of the wintery mountaintop areas. Use them as a quicker mode of travel from peak to peak when exploring the new parts of the map. Be careful not to jump off mid-line and do not use the zipline at the same time as someone else, unless you both want to be waiting for a squad member to revive you at the bottom of the hill.

Balloon fix: Balloons now attach to the backpack instead of being carried. This means players can use weapons while floating with balloons. This is a great fix, as the balloons were near-useless after redeploy was take out of the game.

Fortnite Creative: Fortnite Creative is similar to playground mode with the addition that the entire map is customizable. Build your own cities, create new games, etc. Anything is possible in Fortnite creative mode and we’re sure to see some fun content out of the new mode.

      The Block

Fortnite is helping launch its creative mode with “The Block.” Risky Reels is gone and the area that it once inhabited is now a 25×25 cement foundation. Gamers can create whatever they want on the block and tweet it to @FortniteGame using the hashtag #FortniteBlockParty for their chance to have it featured in the game.

This is a really fun, new way to push Fortnite Creative and also get everyone involved in being a part of their favorite game. It’s also a massive step up from showing homemade Fortnite videos on the Risky drive-in screen. Props to Epic Games for their continuing unmatched user involvement.

Here is some more information on how to get your creative build featured on the block.

      Elimination of the week

It can’t not be an airplane battle. Check out @Nashiscashed with the X-4 stormwing plane take down. Pro-tip: The added vertical dynamic to Fortnite is going to change the game.
