The Conners will return in the new year with episode 9, no new episode airing on ABC this week just after Katey Sagal’s character Louise was revealed.

Katey Sagal arrived over in Lanford last week as Louise, a character fond of Dan Conner going back to high school when he and Roseanne first started dating. Dan would miss the signals at first when she invited him to come to a concert with her but soon his daughters/sister-in-law made him examine the idea. He would ask Louise about the “crazy idea” and she would tell Dan she is absolutely hitting on him, and thought he was into it. Dan would then tell Louise, he still “has a thing for his wife” while motioning with his wedding ring and that he’s not ready for something more yet. They would go to the concert anyway but not as a date.

It’s the first time the show has teased the possibility of Dan fully moving on from Roseanne on the series and a pivotal moment for the series. Whether Louise will return in a regular fashion, even akin to Jackie’s current new boyfriend is unknown but the foundations of a potential relationship are now there. Meanwhile, Becky overheard what Darlene really thinks of her when she was yelling at daughter Harris for drinking, telling her “you don’t want to end up like your aunt Becky.” Becky was naturally distraught and felt everything Darlene had told her about believing in herself with the pregnancy was now a lie. Though the two eventually made up, it seems there will be some lingering damage there on Becky’s psyche for much time to come.

Becky revealed rare vulnerability to Darlene, telling her how much she needed her when Mark passed away and she wasn’t there for her. Her character has certainly developed over the years from once being the more elitist sister after being crushed by the whims of life over and over again, dream wise, relationship wise, and even simply work wise. Darlene’s words reminded Becky once again of her lost potential when she was once the ‘it’ girl, the popular girl who had it all figured out once upon a time. Surely, this concept will be explored further as the season progresses when The Conners returns on Jan. 8, 2019.
