The Bundesliga returns with midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday. In one of the best games of the week, Bayern Munich host RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena. Bayern are nine points behind Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga title. Leipzig are fourth with 28 points, two points behind Bayern.
Bayern have won three straight games to move back up the table. Niko Kovac has tried to fix holes in the midfield by moved Joshua Kimmich from right-back to the defensive midfield. The move has worked but Bayern does not have the full-back depth to make the move permanent. Kimmich returned to right-back over the weekend and scored a goal and added two assists in Bayern’s 4-0 win against Hannover. Robert Lewandowski also scored against Hannover and has been on fire lately. Lewandowski has scored five goals in his last five Bundesliga games and has 22 goals in 22 games this season. The two players will play key roles for Bayern on Wednesday.
While Kovac’s team have performed better in recent games, they are still underachieving at the Allianz Arena. Since the Allianz Arena opened, Bayern have rarely dropped points at their home stadium. However, this season, Bayern have played poorly in front of their fans. Bayern have won only three of seven games and picking up 12 points.
RB Leipzig easily defeated Mainz 4-1 on Saturday, with Timo Werner and Yussuf Poulsen both scoring twice. Werner and Poulsen have been excellent in the front two for Leipzig. Werner is tied for second in the Bundesliga with 10 goals, while Poulsen has scored eight times. Ralf Rangnick has switched formations a lot this season, switching between three and four man back lines, and different shapes in midfield. Rangnick will have to be confident in which formation he uses on Wednesday. If Rangnick makes a mistake, Bayern could make him pay for it immediately.
